samagon
I think you ought to give the maryjane a rest.Despite the obstacles, at least the hotel and movie studio ideas could really be beneficial to Houston at some point. And if not, at least we could say we gave it a shot. The Astrodome deserves better than to have its destruction come about because some pot head wants to take the easy way out (typical behavior).I'm surprised "Legalize MJ, and start growing in DOME" wasn't one of the top 10 possible uses.hell, it doesn't have to be legalized, just do it anyway, it's owned by the county, it isn't like we can all go to jail, right? pm91
movie studio IS the best option! just one show (Friday Night Lights) spawned a whole lot of business and income to the entire area of Pfluggerville. bring that to Houston and the city will become one step closer to fulfilling its goal: The City of Opportunity. lets see, we have world class dancers, singers, musicians, and many other culture boosting professions. now add actors, directors, and all the technology people, Houston could potentially mvoe up on the World-Class city list. tourism will go up because of the films showcasing Houston without even knowing it. Houston is a very gorgeous city and a lot of people dont realize outside of Houston or even Texas. making movies in Houston and have the world to see can and will be a very good thing to have.

Houston is not some "georgeous" city.... it was "georgeous" decades ago before they knocked down 90% of the buildings, built a bunch of boxes and cardboard strip centers every block, became a homeland for 90% of foreigners coming from south of the border, and every neighborhood from those days became a hood.Compared to 1975... I'd say Houston is pretty damn fugly. Edited August 19, 2009 by spiderroller

rsb320
More and more movies are not being filmed in LA because of production costs. Many cities, such as Houston, give incentives for productions that come to their areas. I don't know if this will ever happen with the dome, but it would be totally cool if it did.

I don't know if this will ever happen with the dome, but it would be totally cool if it did.The question that first needs to be answered is whether there is a need for this kind of studio. Filmmaking has become much more common in Austin for a variety of reasons, but pirmarily because of the high concentration of creative types with experience and skills necessary for filmmaking. For this idea to be successful it would have to be as an extension of the Austin film industry. If the established parties there see value in a large studio, then this could work. But I don't know how they view it.

If you can't offer anything constructive to the conversation or to the promotion of Houston you should just tune in and drop out.We don't need your stinking negativity! The title of this thread does not say 'What idea do you have for the Astrodome' etc... This thread is about turning the Astrodome to a Movie Studio! If people out there have the money to turn the Astrodome to a Movie Studio and you don't like it, don't complain like a-holes here go somewhere else. Because I made a number of well-reasoned posts about my views on the ecomonic viability of a film studio, and put forth a number of ideas on what I see as a viable solution. One that represents technological innovation this city should be proud to have its name associated with. That's not negativity. That's called discourse. It's what the HAIF is about. If all you can bring to to table is a bunch of simplistic 'me too' boosterism, do us a favor and go find a kiddie pool like City-Data to play in.

I mentioned above I think there are no really spectacular ideas/uses for the Dome. Some may think it's actually a positive idea to tear it down rather than watching it rot away.

HoustonHillbilly
Since the 4th, 5th and 6th responses on the first page of this thread started to discuss better alternatives than a movie studio I will toss mine into the arena. The studio angle originally quoted was merely a proposal nothing more. Not something etched in stone as the thread title suggests. With tongue in cheek let's kill four birds with one stone and make mega tax revenues for the city in the meantime. A movie studio?? I dunno...sooo boring and 10-50 times more potential tax revenues can be had with other more profitable options. What you do is make it a multiplex. 1/4 is the largest casino, hotel, filly ranch in the world bringing in enormous tax revenues. A huge base of tourist/gambler business and mainstream semi-annual/yearly convention business will be sucked away from Vegas.1/4 is the worlds largest grow house raising enormous tax revenues from the sale and export of legalized weed (pre-Hearst).1/4 of it will be the worlds largest maximum security prison bringing in enormous revenues from other states that send their hopeless basket cases here for eternal maintenance. Since the Huntsville Rodeo is now a memory read on for what the last 1/4 will be.1/4 will be the worlds largest gladiator arena for the criminally insane. Taking inmate volunteers and Death Rowers from the Houston SuperMax this part of the dome will be an updated 21st century version of Rome's Colosseum. A cross between the ancient spectacle and part Mad Max Thunderdome. Three rings will be built, one of them suspended in air, rotating underneath 4 enormous spotlights.Inmates that volunteer (and some that don't) from Houston Supermax will fight to the death in ages old spectacles of chained lions and tigers, unchained, half starved grizzly bears and a deep sea tank of tiger and great white sharks. Massive revenues will surpass that of the 60s and 70s. All the while the nation will become safer day by day.The filming aspect will be covered here by marketing GladiatorDome DVD's to the world market. Each weekly DVD will cover the best, scariest and goriest moments of the previous week. A full box set of 52 DVDs will be issued yearly at a reduced rate to members of the GladiatorDome Club. A massive influx of worldwide orders to GladiatorDome.com will more than support this venture. Weekly worldwide televised $50 Pay Per Views will also bring in massive revenues.

Hey I represent that! I capitulated to privatization argument. If we spend another 5 years debating this, it's just going to be too late by then. I think I'll go down there this weekend and do some Beaux-Arts renderings of it in it's current glory, ala Boullée.

Brilliantly adapted thought process considering multiple options focusing on MAXIMUM REVENUES!Seems a small # of us (i.e. SMALL) have zoned in on ECONOMICS..... and... per observation.... seems a large # of foke have no clue what 'brainstorming' is... All it takes is legalizing gambling and weed and paying off PETA...... piece of cake...
