Firebird65
I saw the earlier thread on the Chuck Wagon restaurant, and that got me to wondering about the old Roy Rogers restaurants. Were there ever any in Houston? I swear that erotic clothing store at Westheimer at the Loop (the one that used to be a Luke's Hamburgers) was also once a Roy Rogers back in the early 1970s. I'm sure I went there as a kid. But I found a Roy Rogers restaurant nostalgia site, and they make no mention of there having been any Roy Rogers in Houston, let alone Texas, and where they say there were sites, they were located in states I've never been to.Anyone know?
jwphillips2
There was one out here in Clear Lake. I think the arrival of Arby's killed them off.
Vertigo58
There was a recent discussion of the Roy Rogers places under Gulfgate (I think). If you search you may find? (getting hungry now)

brerrabbit
Never knew of one under Gulfgate but there was one at the corner of Woodridge and Winkler. As Midtown said its a taquaria now. Right behind it was a Pizza Hut. The one at Westheimer and the Loop was also one. I am not sure but I thought there was one on Fuqua at one time as well. Those are the only ones I remember. houstonmacbro
Ooh. When I lived in DC I used to love RR's fried chicken. It was hot, salty, crispy, moist, crunchy ... and their biscuits weren't bad either.
sevfiv
I looked up Roy Rogers in the 1976 city directory, and there were three or four (of course I left the little paper i wrote them on at home). From memory, there was one at 803 (?) Fannin, just across from the ex-Montagu Hotel, one on Peerless St. in the east end..
nativehou
When I was in first grade (early 70s) my class went on a field trip to the Roy Rogers near Gulfgate. We didn't just stop there on the way to or from another destination -- the trip was specifically to visit the restaurant. It was all great fun to 6-year-olds. But can you imagine the parental uproar that would happen today if a school organized a field trip to a fast food restaurant?
plumber2
The Roy Rogers restaurant at 610 and Westheimer was built on the site of one of the last hold out Italian families that remained in their house while Joske's purchased and built their store at their back doorstep. The family continued to live there for several years, trying to ignore the development going on all around them. Sometime during construction of the Galleria the family finally succumbed to the inevitable and sold out. By then Joske's was not interested in purchasing the property, so the Roy Rogers franchise picked it up.

Yes, there was one in a strip shopping center immediately south of the old Northline Mall (R.I.P) on Crosstimbers between Fulton and the North Freeway. sevfiv
Is that the building currently housing the Hungry Farmer BBQ?Bumping this because I'm curious too - I have a page waiting for the Hungry Farmer on Crosstimbers but I'm having a difficult time finding out what was originally there from about 1969 (when it was built) to 1975 (when Hungry Farmer was there). Absinthe_1900
There was one on Kirby that went up around '68 or so, I was there at the Grand Opening because Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were doing appearances at the opening of the chain. The Kirby location may have been the first in Houston, due to their appearance. I remember there was a big crowd of kids and parents to see them.
brucesw
There's a building on MLK just south of OST that up until August housed Sunshine's Health Food Deli. Very nice folks and tasty food the one time I went in. It's been bugging me for a long time what that building was before and I was thinking maybe an RR or an Arby's. I can't remember just what the RR on 610 looked like before it became Luke's and then the porno store. These pictures are from 2011, I think. Looks kind of like some of the pictures you can find online of older RR restaurants. Anybody know what it was originally? Sunshine's has moved down on Long Drive.
bobruss
I think the Roy Rogers on Kirby became an x rated newsstand for a while and then Johnny Carrabba and Damian came in and bought it and had it blessed by a priest to have the demons of the news stand excommunicated. Now stands the original Carrabbas restaurant.

IronTiger
I met someone who talked about the Roy Rogers restaurants, mentioned that they literally put pressed ham on the hamburgers (in addition to the beef patty). Anyone else want to confirm that?

WaterBucket
I grew up in Houston are and LOVED Roy Rogers as a kid. Went to the Roy Rogers Roast Beef restaurant at Wesheimer and 610 many times as a 20 something which would have been 1970's. On one visit , my friend Jack and I were standing at the counter to pay for our lunch, and Jack nudged me...I looked up, and standing at the counter next to us was Roy Rogers himself !! I stuck out my hand and said "Howdy Roy !" And Roy shook my hand and said "Howdy Partner ". I am 64 now and this remains one of my favorite memories. Spoke to my buddy Jack a few minutes ago and as we reminisced about the old days, this memory was one of the ones that both of us remember very well. Roy had on an iconic white Cowboy hat, with a Black Western style suit, and had a large embroidered Palimino on the back of the jacket as I guess was a tribute to Trigger. Neither Jack or I can remember the date we met him and have both wondered if he might have been in town for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Speaking of memories I came across this thread and thought, "What a cool thread. I remember those restaurants." Then I saw that I was the one who created it. Huh? I don't remember that. When did I do that? NINE YEARS AGO! That makes me feel a little better. I'd have been really worried if it was last month and I didn't remember.
