lockmat,

Well, I think that I may have a bit of an answer as per your aforementioned query. I am not a wealthy person by any means. However thanks to my great position with my firm "Fluor Daniel Government Projects" within the confines of the Theater of Afghanistan. My position allows for me to accept a substantial compensation...for which in turn, allows for me to patronize establishments such as the W Qatar, Hotel Kempinski, Mall of Emirates, St. Regis Bali, Indonesia, Victoria & Albert Hotel, South Africa....to name a few.

I patronize these reputable and yet highly notable establishments due to the sheer quality, service, and attention to any and every detail as per their many clientele.....as per any race, creed, lifestyle, religion imaginable....

I work extremely hard upon my job as a top level administrative contractor as per the US Military. This shall include extremely long hours....enduring extremely difficult elements.....all of the while based in extreme and yet highly austere environments. Trust me my good pal....when it is time for a vacation....I am purely exhausted.

Therefore, these are the reasons.....as stated above....for which people like myself (in my line of business) choose to patronize such luxury establishments.

These particular luxury establishments.....tend to bring back the HUMAN in humankind.....trust me on this one......

Do you need a valet?

H&M is in Willowbrook Mall, and we have Carl's Jr., so we probably won't get an In & Out Burger. But that last part is word of mouth.

InO will be coming to Houston. I don't think they care that Carl Jr is here.

Email I got back from W. Pretty generic too obviously:

 Dear Trae,

Thank you for reaching out to W Hotels and Resorts regarding a possible W Hotel in Houston, Texas.

We appreciate your loyalty and welcome your valuable feedback regarding expanding our chain of W Hotels and Resorts.  At present we do not have plans for a W in Houston, Texas.  Starwood is opening a new Westin Hotel towards the end of this year in Houston, expanding our offerings in the area.

we will forward your comments to management. It is great to know we are appreciated and wanted in the area and understand having a W Hotel in Houston for Super Bowl is an awesome idea.  Who knows it is far enough in the future that it may be?

Should you require additional assistance, simply reply to this email. If you prefer, you may chat with us online or we can call you.

Your opinion is important. Please let me know how my customer service was by completing our customer service feedback survey.

Best Regards,

edit: ^^why is my m-e-h being changed to moo?

Really ?! How soon?

Next year. They have plans to expand across the region, which is why they built a distribution center in DFW.

Well it's cool to see they are at least considering it.

And yeah, this problem is something that every user expereinces haha.  I've seen a lot of "moo's" around here.

The email says that they are opening a new Westin Hotel in Houston at the end of the year. Does anyone know where ?

A while back it was mentioned that The Inn at the Ballpark was going to become a Westin, that is probably it.

Will the new convention center Marriott across the street from Discovery Green be high end?

I guess it depends on what one's definition of "high end" is.  I think the new Marriott Marquis will be very nice, in any case.  As will be the JW Marriott on Main St.  They will be different, though, since one will be glitzy new construction and the other a renovation of a 102-year-old building.

The Hyatt Place brand is down-market relative to the other 2, but still nice, which makes it a great fit for the convention center area.  It would be a mistake to want only super high-end properties to serve the convention center, but having at least one would be nice.

When I think of super high-end (like some earlier posters) I'm thinking of brands like St. Regis, Ritz Carlton, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons.  If you try to book one of these hotels in a certain big west-coast city, you will probably find that their room rates are over $500/night.  So, it's obviously a niche market.

In that city, rates for JW Marriott, Fairmont, W, or Intercontinental fall more or less near $400/night.

Rates for Marriott Marquis, Hyatt Regency, Le Meridien, Westin, and Nikko fall in the $200s/night range.

Those prices are just a sample of what I found online for a weekend in September for a particular city, so keep that in mind.  Also, I'm using price as a proxy for niceness,  which is obviously a big assumption.  In any case, I think they are all very nice, high-end hotels.  (Also, probably too expensive for most people, but they do benefit society by providing jobs.)   In the upper echelon of those, Houston has two (St. Regis and Four Seasons).  However, those are both 30-or-so years old now.

So, I hope this explains my previous post.  While I'm very happy we're getting a bunch of very nice new hotels, I wonder why places like Atlanta have all 4 of the super high-end hotels I mentioned above, and Houston has only 2, both of which were built during the oil boom of the late 70s-early 80s.

So does anyone else get peaved at the fact that Houston, a city with a metro of 6M+ and the strongest city economy in the USA, doesn't have any real luxury hotels? Hotels like the W, Ritz, Meridien, Mandarin, etc. seem to completely steer clear of Houston for some reason even though cities like Dallas and Charlotte have almost all the hotels listed above? I don't know, I think luxury hotels are a big factor in Houston growing. That's my little rage.

swtsig, that is very interesting news.  The luxury hotel stock in this town is so dated...a High End place could really make an impact and see not just a reaction from the traveling community, but from the local population, at least as a party, banquet venue.  Where do we think a Ritz, Fairmont or other top escalon brand would locate? Does BLVD Place still seem probable?  I think that a smaller Luxury Brand might consider the Museum District/Herman Park Location.  Compliment to ZaZa, more attractive location and the New Wing of mfaH will add to the interest in the area...which seems to be underserved by hotels.

That's the same exact place I was thinking about...Museum District. With a lot of developments, renovations, and redevelopments going on I wouldn't doubt it.

At one point the old Texaco building was going to be converted into a Ritz.  There's probably some renderings of the project on HAIF.  Anyway, it fell through before the financial crisis.  They probably regret it now.

Will this be part of GreenStreet or were they looking to build something smaller, perhaps more boutique.

honestly i dont see this being either of those. they both seem too small.. the greenstreet hotel rendering seemed fairly short and wouldnt have any views except facing east. going by Ritz original plan for BLVD place id say they will probably build tall. then again im no expert and the economy crash might of made them reconsider such large scale plans.

Ritz Carlton L.A., located a couple of blocks away from the Staples Center...and yes, it is Gorgeous!  Maybe this could by chance be the strategy behind Houston's prospective Ritz Carlton.

....locate it right in the center of all the action downtown...basketball, baseball, conventioneers, house of blues, etc..etc..

Someone over on City-Data says it may be as tall as the one planned pre-recession:

"By the way, Ritz-Carlton is actively seeking a surface lot along the East End Line in Downtown, near Discovery Green, they'll be building their hotel there. Rumor has it that while they haven't released their blue print yet, it'll match the one they had for BLVD Place in height before the recession killed that off."

I registered on City Data to ask this member about the supertall and Ritz. He told me that he's asked a source that works with Ritz and Le Meridian if the rumors were true about them building in DT and they confirmed Ritz is trying to expand into Houston. They mentioned to him it would be in the 40+ floor range which is close to their other works in other cities.

Edit: I hope it's next to Toyota Center and like the LA Live!
