  1. Placing some steel I-beams vertically @ Rusk & Travis. It looks like they topped out the garage side too.

  3. Got both signage before one of them disappeared! Re: Palace Bowling Lanes next door Per Swamplot? the tenant did not pay their rent so they were locked out of the property. Not very welcoming to have a junky, empty lot next door to Class-A apartments. of course litter is accumulating down the sidewalk from Alexan Southside Place

  5. I like that they are bringing it to a Greek Cross format, which is more historically appropriate for the Orthodox faith than the Latin cross which the sanctuary has had up until now. I belong to a different denomination, but one which also has a deep architectural and liturgical tradition and one which has recently seen revivals of that tradition following a 20th century watering down of everything. Seeing other churches do this is a win-win, as it spurs a good-spirited competition and establishes a place for traditional architecture in Houston.

  7. For anyone interested. The San Jacinto side was lit up with LED lights across the turqoise. It made for an extremely modern and sleek look. I am not sure if they were just testing, but it looked AWESOME. For those of you who doubted this project, see it with the lighting. If you STILL don't like it, there is nothing else left to change your mind. I think alot of people will like it / appreciate it when they see it completed, and the lighting effect ON.

  11. Their stuff in Melbourne looks quite nice. I'll feel a lot more confident about these towers if Caydon can get a construction loan for The Midtown to move forward on that. Some of what I've been reading (can't remember the source but it was one of Swamplot's linked articles) suggested Houston could turn into a landlord's market by late 2019.

  13. From their website: "Hotel Opens August 22. Taking Reservations September 12. We open our doors on August 22, 2017 and are accepting reservations for stays on or after September 12, 2017." looks like rates start (rack rate) at $260 per night plus $42 in taxes, so, $304 and go up from there.

  14. I will try. Looks like they are still doing a ton of work on the other side. Not sure if they were just testing... If anyone is around and does see the lights on. Snap a pic... preferably not when you're driving.

  21. Randall D would (well, might) earn my undying gratitude if he would join the ranks of developers who mitigate the visual impact of their parking podiums by incorporating cascading vines or other greenery onto their facades. I don't expect it to happen, especially in Houston, but one can hope ...

  22. Root Park has some amazing trees. Too bad it doesn't have any sidewalks around its edge, at least on this side. Wonder if they got taken away when La Branch St was expanded to a freewayesque 5 lanes. I think I-45 downtown is only 4 lanes per side.

  25. Someone has to know someone that works for Gensler... These would be magnificent. EXACTLY what Midtown has needed for a very long time.

  26. FAA links have been updated, both towers will be mixed-use residential. Edit: Gensler is the architect and Caydon is the developer.

  29. I think that is kinda sorta correct. The San Jacinto extension to Fulton has been delayed because of cost. A combination of the cost of meeting the UPRR's requirements and obtaining the right of way between the UPRR and the current I-10. That lack of connectivity helped to push along the reconfiguration of Main and Burnett so that Hardy Yards and the Burnett Transit Center were accessible. It remains on the city's plans (and the relocation of I-10/I-45 through that area may actually make it easier as it might take care of the right-of-way acquisition costs...

  30. The Fulton/San Jac connection wasn't constructed alongside the other Hardy Yards improvements due to objections from Union Pacific. That's why the Main Street tunnel was shortened and a new intersection with Burnett was created instead. Not sure if it'll be attempted in the future but it seems very difficult politically, as most things are with the railroads. Source: have had some exposure to the project at work

  31. Near Northside is definitely going to be the next hot spot and in some ways it's already beginning as Naviguessor has pointed out. It's the Houston market that had the fourth largest increase in home prices at a 112.1% increase from 2010 to 2016. It's not really what I would consider the hood.. just because there are many low income families here doesn't mean it's the hood. More middle class families are beginning to move in considering I now know architects, engineers (even one that works for NASA that I met here at HAIF), and many office workers that work in downtown/Galleria area/Memorial City, including myself. I've lived here for 5 years now and the transformation has been fast. There are plenty of new homes being built left and right since many people feel priced out of the Heights and Woodland Heights area. And the big thing is that I know for a fact many people are looking to buy property in the Near Northside because they see the potential here. I myself am hoping to purchase more land on this side as well. I seriously believe N Main will be a hot destination even if the homeless situation is not figured out over at Salvation Army. I don't think it will ever be the Woodlands... in my opinion, that's a high standard, but I do very well see it becoming more like Montrose or the Heights area, but with it's own unique style and culture.

  32. By your reckoning, is "the hood" anything inside 610? I'd bet dollars to donuts Near Northside has less crime than about any area of The Woodlands. If they can address the flop houses that popped up with all the mental cases there, it's probably one of the safest places to be. The neighbors are primarily long-term working-class families that have owned the houses for generations, with younger professionals who couldn't afford the Heights taking over the abandoned properties and empty lots. There's a sense of community there that is sorely lacking in any of our suburban disaster areas, or even many of our supposedly higher-quality downtown neighborhoods. @Triton - Could be worse things to go in there, but it's still such a waste for JUST that to go in. Though if the Washington Avenue HEB plans are any indication, they could do it right. They definitely need something other than just that old Fiesta. Hopefully it's close enough to the Katyville Walmart that we don't have to worry about another one of those showing up.

  33. Near Northside is an up and comer, wxman. You'll be sorry you didn't get in on the ground floor, when you had the chance. Aside from being walking distance from the LR and just a couple stops from downtown, you'll soon have expanded and enormous St Arnold's Beer Garden, within a short walk and White Oak Music Hall/Raven Tower/Etc., just up Main. If you haven't yet been to The Edison (just about 1.5 mile or a few LR stops north) you're in for a real treat. But, I guess if you've got the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and all the Olive Garden breadsticks you can eat, I could see your point of view. However...I do agree that this development was lacking from the start, and I agree with Montrose...The Clock tower was the beginning of the problem.

  38. ya i don't know what that comment is supposed to mean but i dig the church. Houston is severely lacking in grand, historic looking churches and while this is grand on the scale of st. mark's on woodway it's a good looking church.
