  1. As the prime food contractor, Aramark had control over any new use of the property for food. UH just rebid their food services contract this past spring and switched to a new company who I assume now has control of the property and is probably starting from scratch to plan a use for it. That said, UH rebid their food services contract after an audit recommended changes. (They were auditing all departments of A&F.) If you could find that full audit report it might have recommendations about the use of the property which might have been included as requirements in the RFP for the new food services contract.

  2. I had an opportunity to play with an Oculus last night and one of the first things I did after I figured out how to use the joy sticks was to tour Houston on Google earth. It was amazing first to watch the buildings start popping up out of the ground all around me and to fly through the different parts of town. The med center was amazing along with the galleria uptown and obviously downtown. At one point I was trying to tilt and rotate and found myself getting a little queasy. It was an incredible experience and when I zoomed out eventually I was observing the earth in the Universe as if I was floating out in space, and I was standing ion the middle of it with stars, planets, and the milky way, all around me 360. What an incredible device. The drawing in three dimensions and the ability to grab the object and rotate it and render is fascinating. But I loved seeing the city in 3D that way. What a tool for working out spatial issues in urban planning. I was blown away.

  3. I'm surprised I wasn't able to find this on HAIF. I ran a few searches, but nothing came up. Apologies if this is a repeat thread... Swamplot reported in May that the Univ. of St. Thomas will be building a new performance arts center near the Menil campus. The article indicates that the building will be four stories and just under 100k square feet. Here's the accompanying rendering: http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/st-thomas-performing-arts-center.jpg University of St. Thomas's Performing Arts Center Moving in Next to Menil Campus

  7. That's the Glassell camera slcowart416n referred to. I've never seen it aimed at the Kinder Building; anyone know if they ever aim it up there?

  8. It looks like this puts a sharper segregation between the wholesale and retail portions of the site. If this first phase is successful at turning this site into a destination, the days might be numbers for the wholesale warehouse on the north edge of the site.

  9. Does anyone have any updated info on the old Chinese Star building? They were kicked out at the end of last fall semester, and there was a big deal in the DC about students having an option on what replaces it, but I haven't seen/heard anything since then.

  10. There is no Sarofim Building. I assume you're talking about the new 20th/21st century museum expansion that recently broke ground, which is the Kinder Building. The entirety of the museum complex is named the "Sarofim Campus" though.

  20. I'm surprised it has taken this long. I love saving old buildings but the law school is beyond saving. It's dark, damp, and flood prone. It's also just plain ugly.

  24. Can't believe all the celebration at the potential loss of retail. When I lived in the area I used the Fiesta quite frequently to pick up a few things. What irks me is that huge surface lot between the Sears and the Fiesta and the underutilised green space around Wheeler Station. The area on both sides of the highway seem poorly used. A Ventana sized complex on that surface lot between Sears and Fiesta might help out the area a lot.
