  3. I saw some lights running the crease from the bottom to the top on the other day... So i know the full lighting scheme has not been implemented just yet. FYI the lights we saw on a couple days ago are just the cycle through / testing... Let wait till the building is 'complete' to judge the lighting.

  6. Downtown was amazing this weekend. Walking around the Discovery Green area and Main St/Market Square Park area Friday and Saturday night was unbelievable. The atmosphere was amazing and all of the out of towners I talked to said how much they enjoyed Houston.

  7. I'm not a fan of Trump either, but this is disgusting to say the least. WTH is going on here especially in Texas. Burning Mosque, spraying swastikas everywhere. Not cool people, not cool.

  11. I heard a lot of visitors enjoyed the city. One guy I met from Illinois said he had heard of Houston but didn't know much about it. He was impressed with everything and he thought we had a very nice city and downtown. And a big positive was that he said he wanted to come back to Houston after the SB.

  13. Posting this in this thread since the Convention Center thread has gotten a little acrimonious (which I may have contributed to...?). Made the drive in from Austin on Saturday morning with my old man, who I walked downtown with on the same day in 2004. We figured out a way to get in and out of downtown with zero traffic: the trusty Elysian Viaduct. Got on Hardy Street at the North Loop and headed south. The neighborhoods we passed through had either deteriorated since last time or my eyes have changed; I could not believe the dilapidation of the houses, and the omnipresent chain-link fences around the front yards. A few pockets of gentrifying townhomes amid a sea of disrepair. Was starting to wonder if I see Houston through rose-colored glasses, and then we were on the viaduct, looking down on Hardy Yards and St. Arnold's on either side, and the skyline rising up before us out of a misty gray sky. Wow. I have combed through the photos on here, but nothing could prepare me for the impact of all the new buildings. Particularly the new neighborhood that has emerged around Minute Maid Park, with its bricky feel, anchored by Finger's apartments. The whole panorama from Minute Maid Park to Market Square Tower a feast for the eyes. If someone ever builds an observation tower for Houston, please put it on the north end in the warehouse district. The thought of Boston crossed my mind. When we got out of the car at Congress and LaBranch, I was in a daze, almost hopping past the five blocks or so to Discovery Green. What a city we have, my friends.

  14. It was a success and I hope that investors liked how Houston did and it's potential as it keeps growing. I have a feeling more great things are coming.

  19. The part of my post that you quoted is so reasonable and simple a request, one strains to see how it could bother anyone. Just warn people going out that they won't be able to get back in. A simple sign: "No Re-Entry Tonight." Like I said though, great day overall.

  20. You're annoyed by over-managing? The management was by far above world class, if that's even possible. To go a full week without incident is incredible! Just imagine if the downtown population grows to that level consistently, at least we know the city of Houston can handle it like nothing. And yeah, parks reach capacity, big freaking deal. Not too difficult to understand. It's wasn't a bad thing that park was filled to capacity.

  26. Oh so that's what we call that area. I always found myself struggling to find a name to describe that area. Me- "So it's like west of downtown sort of.." Friend- "Oh you mean Montrose?" Me- "No...its north of Montrose" Friend- "So you mean the Heights?" Me- "No to far north, it's below I-10" Friend- "Sooo..Washington?" Me- "That's a street" Friend- "East Downtown?" Me- "I hate you"

  28. I have their names and one is a cardio vascular doctor with Methodist. The other two are probably involved. They had a hotel in Beaumont in their med center but it closed. They own over 30 projects between the three. See my earlier post for more info. I have contacted KHOU, Channel 2, and Culture Maps. Nothing yet but with more input from more Haifers and we might be able to get the ball rolling.

  29. Time for a meeting with the wrecking ball. frankly, it's time for the TV news to start chasing down the landowners, citing them by name and profession, and getting them on record with what they intend to do with this property.

  30. Geez. I didn't realize it was so covered with graffiti and becoming a real eyesore. Didn't seem that long ago when it was just a concrete building that was an eyesore but still reminded one of its grand past. And in better days, courtesy of Arch-ive.org:

  31. And I've been there once (and apparently observed more than you did in two visits). It's hell being proven wrong, isn't it? The fact is, the Boston crowds are in the Esplanade and they limit the admittance, just as Houston did in Discovery Green for this event and for the comparable Final Four events. Facts can be stubborn and not that hard to learn.

  32. The biggest difference is Tilman can be self-deprecating. I was at the opening of the newly renovated tennis facility at UH. Tilman joked with the woman it is named after by saying something to the effect of "i don't normally do photos next to other people's names but I'll make an exception for you." It was really cute and he totally poked fun at himself for being an attention seeker. The Donald would never. He would have attacked that old lady on twitter.
