  1. Oh so that's what we call that area. I always found myself struggling to find a name to describe that area. Me- "So it's like west of downtown sort of.." Friend- "Oh you mean Montrose?" Me- "No...its north of Montrose" Friend- "So you mean the Heights?" Me- "No to far north, it's below I-10" Friend- "Sooo..Washington?" Me- "That's a street" Friend- "East Downtown?" Me- "I hate you"

  10. Ummm, a park can get full when it has as many people in it as can safely be accommodated. Pretty simple concept. Yes, I've been to Boston on 4th of July. Have you? They probably don't shut down the Boston Common because the celebration is in the Esplanade. And when the secured areas of the Esplanade reach capacity (imagine that, a park reaching capacity), they don't let in any more people. When the secured areas are full on July 3rd and July 4th, NO additional wristbands will be distributed.

  11. And maybe warn people going out that they won't be able to get back in because it's getting dark and going to be bedtime soon. Great day overall, just annoyed by the overmanaging.

  12. Ummm, how can a park get full? Ever been to Boston on 4th of July? They don't shut down Boston Common cause there's too many people. Anyway there were streams of people coming out, so wait awhile and open it back up.

  14. The freeway message board said that the DG stuff was at capacity and gates were shut when I was driving in around 6. (paraphrasing)

  15. What on earth was with the decision to close all the gates around 8 PM? We walked out to go walk around Main Street some before returning to see ZZ Top at 9, and when we got back at 8:30, all the gates were closed! No more entry until tomorrow, we were told. Way to throw a prudish party, Houston!

  17. i live in that neighborhood. Depending on who I am talking to i say Montrose or Midtown. I never say neartown, if I did no one would have any idea what I'm talking about and I would just have to explain using Montrose and Midtown as references anyways.

  19. What is even good about sinking the highway, tbey Would get the same benefits with widening the elevated highway, plus not massively destroy an entire neighbourhood (of apartment complex with an appearance of a neighbourhood) And many blocks maybe demolish half of the block is fine, but not the entire block, And not blockading various streets. And the fact that the elevated highways are barriers is nonsense, ive crossed under the pierce elevated and it's not bad you can still get to the other side without even realising that there's an elevated highway there.(okay you realise it but you don't have to stop and go around various blocks away to get to the other side) Whilst i-45 North, you go on some random city street, turns out it's blockaded by the freeway, great now I've to go to airline drive or Tidwell or West or any, to get to the other side. The elevated highway was made to not create a barrier, so that the cars could cross on the streets below, it's downtown Houston, not the old West Berlin. And why do they not demolish the convention centre, that's a barrier too. It takes like 10 blocks,.(I'm assuming) And if they want to do it because we "don't have enough parks" that's nonsense. We have many parks compared to other cities.and I don't know about you but nearly every time I've been to downtown they're not crowded, except once but it was because it was new year. And the worst.... rerouting the 45 creating curves where you have to curve more than 80 degrees... and it's longer and pointless. Makes drivers not want to take that highway. And besides they're covering it so its a tunnel. Have you ever been in a tunnel.? It's terrifying, you get the feeling like you dont have enough space to breathe and like it all will collapse you and the noise makes the closed in space (as my friend calls it) too uncomfortable And the lights inside the tunnel don't make it better. It's scary. I hope this project doesn't happen, and that elevated highway stay up cos elevated highways are the best thing ever. (I used to be (amd still am) so fascinated by the fact that there were many elevated highways here when I moved here... but i guess the Houstonians and every one else hates it) So I'm trying to peacefully and not aggressively make sense. I hope someone reads. That... i want to get this project cancelled which I've tried for 14 months and only 1 person (who moved to Europe) understood Just saying idk..

  21. The biggest difference is Tilman can be self-deprecating. I was at the opening of the newly renovated tennis facility at UH. Tilman joked with the woman it is named after by saying something to the effect of "i don't normally do photos next to other people's names but I'll make an exception for you." It was really cute and he totally poked fun at himself for being an attention seeker. The Donald would never. He would have attacked that old lady on twitter.

  33. Midtown sat on that parcel for AGES before actually moving forward on the project. Then, once they did begin construction, it progressed too slowly. Only after it was too late did they throw huge crews on the site to try to finish on time. And because it's become a rush job, we'll probably be left with shoddy workmanship. This project is just one example of Midtown's deficiency in the capital project management department. They've been advertising a Caroline Street re-do for years with zero progress to-date. Bagby park took ages to complete. Improvements to Baldwin Park a couple of years ago were underwhelming, at best. The lighting "improvements" there are already trashed. Disappointing......

  34. We're the fourth largest city in the Country and we have exactly ONE newly built hotel/condo tower. The Four Seasons downtown was a conversion of old corporate apartments and don't have any of the bells and whistles these new properties have (10-12 foot ceilings, gas appliances, fireplaces, private terraces, etc...) Four Seasons, W Hotels, Fairmont, Conrad by Hilton, Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Mandarin Oriental, Westin, Loews, St Regis, Kimpton, Canyon Ranch, SLS, Viceroy, Bentley and a few other chains have opened numerous hotel + residences over the last decade. Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, New York, LA, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Baltimore, DC, Philly, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Phoenix, and Orlando have all received more than Houston.
