HAIF Life Tips - Every day Practical & Helpful Information

I just thought this would be a fun idea, to start a thread dedicated to sharing new things you learn in life that may be of help to others.

We are all at different points in out lives. While some of us have learned and experienced a lot, others have yet had the privilege for some things.

And as we share different things, it will also encourage fun and informative conversations.

When considering what to share and what not to, remember what our grade school teachers taught us, there's no such thing as a dumb question (how many posts before someone takes a cheap shot at that saying?). There also is no dumb thing to share. What you may think is something everyone knows, remember there may actually a lot of people who don't.

So whether it's a tip for saving money, finding a job, getting a mortgage or whatever, share it here.

I've got a couple...

Instead of using Netflix, try Hoopla. It's exactly like Netflix but it's free if you have a library card.

Also, lately I've strictly been grocery shopping by unit price, when comparing like products (organic vs. organic, non-organic vs. non-organic etc, of course). I know probably everyone knows about unit prices but how many actually utilize it?

I like this idea, similar to LPT on Reddit w/out the wackos. Here's one simple thing (for guys) that has saved me tons of time... shave your face in the shower with bar soap. It works better than shaving cream, saves you a ton of time, you just rinse off in the shower, and it's more relaxing instead of bending over a sink.

You don't feel like you need a mirror? I've had a fogless mirror before and it didn't work.

I was going to say that this is impossible for me, as I only trim my bead and haven't gone full baby face in a year or so, and requires a non fogged up mirror.

Thank you for calling it "Life Tips" and not "Life Hacks". Every time I see the latter I want claw my eyes out.

Here's mine. If you have Clorox wipes or something similar they work great for getting scuff marks off of your sneakers. Mr. Clean's magic erasers are magic in the fact they disappear and disintegrate right before your very eyes. They work well but not for very long.

If you have a hang over, try some sparking water (Ozarka & Topo Chico are the best), and squeeze a fresh lime and lemon into it. The bubbles help settle your stomach similar to alkaseltzer, and the lemon & lime are refreshing. Good for your kidneys too.

No need for mirror (practice I guess?). I shave close to the side burns, then just go over the rest of the face. When I get out I'll put some soap on places if I need to touch up and quickly knock it out in the sink.

don't over-do the lemon water, it will dehydrate you, which is the opposite of what you want.

easiest way to wake up in the morning, don't use the snooze button, get out of bed immediately and stretch, or do some activity to get your blood flowing. I begin the day by throwing the sheets off of me and literally jumping out of bed, then doing some core exercises, before I go to bathroom, drink water, brush teeth, dress, anything. No matter if I only got 3 hours of sleep the night before, I feel ready to go. Granted, if I only got 3 hours of sleep the night before, I might start getting tired around noonish.

which brings me to my next point, staying awake! Keep a bag of pistachios, or peanuts at your desk, if you feel yourself flagging as the day goes on. eat a few peanuts, or pistachios, the act of chewing does something crazy in the brain and wakes you up. Doesn't have to be pistachios or peanuts, I just like them cause they're healthy and taste good (I'm looking at you dried fruits), you can eat whatever you want, you can even just chew gum. don't do a candy bar, the sugar will wake you up, but in 30 minutes you'll be worse off than you were.

smiles are contagious and release hormones in our brains that help us live longer, use them liberally in an effort to infect everyone with a happier longer life.

oh, and don't shave at all. just keep a trimmer and trim your beard weekly to a nice short beard. it will provide insulation in the winter, and thanks to the magical effects of evaporation, it will help keep you cool in the summer when it gets wet with sweat. Stop wasting your money on razors.

I've done the shower shave for years.  It's more comfy on the face bits, too.  No need for a fog free mirror (they don't really work that well, anyway, and Sharper Image is gone) - just swipe your wet paw over the glass and you're good to go.

ha! I used to not be, back when I was working in web development and I lived about a mile away from the office, and I didn't need to be in until 9am, I'd set my alarm for 7:30 and sleep through 6 snooze bars, and be grumpy until lunch. Then I just said 'stuff it' and forced myself to get up on that first alarm.

Best thing I've done in my life, outside of only wearing flip flops (outside of work and sports), quitting smoking and deciding to never ever buy another FWD car.

Bingo. I do this now and it's a real time saver.
