if he never killed the monorail in favor of his personal projects..man

The monorail (or people mover) was Lyle Langley's Kathryn Whitmire's pet project voted not on the people but by her own METRO board. The people voted in a, and here's a quote from a 1/3/1988 Chron article, a "non-binding referendum" for a long-term METRO plan. I realize Lanier's anti-rail push was controversial, but don't distort facts.

he pushed for suburban sprawl and got it...that's his legacy

That is unfair with regard to his time as mayor.   He was quite focused on and accomplished a lot in making the city of Houston, including the inner city more liveable, by reducing crime, raising the standards of the parks and making infrastructure improvements. I recall him saying (I'm paraphrasing):  If I can't provide a place where people prefer to live when the alternative is an hour-long commute, then shame on me.

livable inner city?  tearing down and stripping 4th ward to the core in places or townhomes?  lol

Bob Lanier hasn't been mayor in about 17 years, with redevelopment in areas like Montrose and Freedmen's Town mostly in points after that, and that's mostly because the land value was so high that it was more profitable to build that sort of thing. You'd rather have the inner city be some low land value wasteland that no one wants to build on? Sorry kid, but you're either blaming something that Lanier didn't actually do or treating the whole gentrification of the inner loop like a bad thing, which it isn't, crappy townhomes and "Texas donuts" aside. Quit trolling, if you don't have anything nice to say about Lanier, don't post.
