Hate it. Lance Zierlein is too good to listen to these guys. Lopez is probably the worst in all of Houston sports radio. Wright is basically another Adam Wexler which isn't a good thing.

Kbates2: I don't see Nick being around in 6 years from now because he's using Houston as a stepping stone to a bigger job such as CBS Sports Radio or ESPN.

I've enjoyed local talk less and less. I love the Texans but that's all they talk about. Plus I don't like the locker room/guy talk. Keep it clean, kids listen (or used to) too.

Instead of local I listen to Colin Cowherd's podcast, he's really good.

Plus, there's criticism of the way Nick keeps bringing up his drug problems & gay crap, etc., he's also blocked people, who've called out Nick for his poor sports takes on Twitter.

Good god. It's f-ing awful. Lopez's takes are almost always half-baked and are typically quickly and easily rebutted by Nick Wright. On the other hand, Nick "coming up after the break" Wright is an intelligent guy but tries to comes off as some hyper-intellectual and is nothing but a hack activist for civil rights and social justice with a super annoying voice to boot. I mean really, I can't take more than a few minutes of that guy's voice. For those of you who think he's headed for national radio pastures..... please..... he can't even manage beating his competing time-slot rival which also has a major handicap in Adam Clanton. It's bascially Lance vs. Nick and Lance is beating him consistently.

You are actually the first person I've ever come across to not believe that Colin Cowherd is giant piece of shit. Not only only do you not think he's a piece of shit but you think he's "really good". Wow.

Big question is how long before the higher-up's of the station realize that & start making some changes ?

I don't know. Just based on history it seems radio shows have to be really bad in the short run or really mediocre for very long periods of time before changes are contemplated. How mediocre radio guys like Lopez and Rich Lord and Adam Clanton are still employed at the first or second best radio station in the city is curious to me.

You must think I'm really crazy because I also think Rich Lord does a solid job.

What qualities in your opinion makes a good sports radio guy? Who do you and your circles like?

Lockmat, there's several people on Facebook & Twitter, who obviously don't like Nick because of his little whining everytime he brings up stupid crap in his personal life (his wife had to open a jar for him LOL). Jim Mudd needs his own show on Sports Radio 610 someday.

He knows his sports, he would be fine if he just stuck to that.

Eh, well to start he's often uninformed, relies on platitudes and cliches to support his opinions and in my opinion really boring. He'll stay the safe route on every occasion and every topic. Who know he was fired from being the Texans sideline reporter right? Well I can't help but to think that it was because when he was interviewing Jesse Jackson during Superbowl week he unbelievably asked him whether he has a nephew who plays for the Texans. Any casual Texans fan (let alone the f-ing OFFICIAL TEXANS SIDELINE REPORTER!) knows that Darryl Sharpton (nephew of Al Sharpton) played for the Texans at the time. I mean, if that's not dim-witted and incompetent I don't know what it is.

For me it's not just his self-absorbed personal takes which kill the show. I tuned in this morning during a 790 commercial and Wright/Lopez were just finishing up a top 10 list of something or other. He then teased us with another top 10 list of something or other after the break. That's why I call him Nick "coming up after the break" Wright. I don't know about you but if I want a top ten list on anything I'll go to Buzzfeed or Bleacer Reprt. LAZY RADIO!!!!!!!!!

Is anyone else annoyed by the whistles on one of their many bits. Do they not understand how that whistle sounds on AM radio?

During the 2013 Super Bowl between Seattle & Denver ? LOL, I think the do remember that interview, Lord was later relieved from his duties as the sideline reporter not too long afterwards LOL.

I think Rich did well as a sideline reporter. To my knowledge it was never stated that he was fired.

Vandameer is the head of Texans broadcasting and so he brought in the new guy and they are using him in multiple roles. It seems more that they wanted to utilize the new guy rather than "fire" Rich. Rich I believe is still doing pregame stuff for 610.

Even based on the way you described it that sounds an awful lot like being fired from a particular job. That job pays separate from his normal radio duties and so is considered a wholly separate job. And doing pregame on the radio is hardly the same thing as sideline reporter.

The new guy that you mention is John Harris is really good and he can probably tell you all the players' middle names let alone know that one of them has a famous uncle. You can't say that for Rich Lord because he had no clue.

I'll say this I much prefer Lopez+Wright to any one employed by the Texans!  John Harris has sophomoric/childish takes and is embarrsing.  Vandameer is so PROTEXANS its sick.  That and I hate the Verizone players show where they interview players at some cell phone store on Tuesday's - most of the time they are players of little interest.

Lopez and Wright have low moments but by and large are some what interesting when they're actually discussing sports.  Nick is pretty good if he'd just veer away from so many comments about Beyonce (she's really not all that).

And while we're at it - Rich Lord is a pretty bad radio personality.

I'll also echo the sentiment that MAD Radio is pretty good with Meltser and Payne (Payne's really good for being a former NFL'er) and Meltser seems to play off him fairly well.

Consider a sports analogy: when a new head coach is hired he let's go of the current coaches and brings in his own guys. They're not necessarily fired for incompetence as so many have claimed is what happened to Rich.

John Harris is a football guy. He knows X's and O's. I like that, and it seems to be the main reason why people like him so much. It does not however necessarily make him better than Lord. Most sports talk guys don't know too much x and o's, or at least they don't talk about it.

And I don't hold one mistake on Super Bowl radio row, an highly impromptu environment, against him.

I think he produces highly realistic insights while most local jocks act more like fans and have inflammatory takes.

That's one way to spin a firing, sure. I mean if my manager left and the new manager replaced me with someone else and I was asked in no ambiguous terms to not come back here anymore, I think I'd feel pretty "fired". But that's just me.

I also don't know that Vandermeer is the one making these decisions. Even if he is, he's been his current position well before Lord was "replaced" so your assistant coach analogy fails a little there.

I think once Harris was let go from 1560 it was a pretty easy decision to be made, whoever decided.

Explains why Lord is acting cranky lately LOL!

Didn't Harris go to college with O'Brien?  Homeboy hookup...

neither of the morning shows are of interest to me...same topics...they go off the beaten path to generate jokes...when a female comes on there you can hear the slobber, need I go on?

They need some serious diversity on Houston radio and not just a black voice to talk about pro sports (which the trend is now get a pro athlete with no training)...our stations do not cover local teams, colleges, high schools, etc....it's pitiful...

I've never understood the vitriol that people reserve for talk-radio.  If you don't like it, don't listen!

I'll say that to hbcu's point:  Houston does need better coverage of local teams, though I really don't think a city with all but one major professional sport present + UH, Rice, A&M, UT, Baylor, Tech, TCU etc. have a need to cover much in the way of high school sports.  A mention or two is sufficient for most of the shows, maybe a local sports on Sunday night or something?

I do think Houston needs more diversity (and radio-ready) people in the local airwaves, certainly couldn't hurt.

And the off topic stuff does get to be too frequent, not to mention the clear sexism regarding females.  A little of that goes a long way!  They need to tone it down.

it's bad now....outside of Charlie's show, which stays free from lame games, uninformed guests, etc., the rest is a waste of airwaves

KCOH 1230 does the best at mixing all the topics in but you can only cram so much in the 2-hour window from 5-7.

The rest of the stations just plain suck and are trying to be like each other instead of being different....everyone is on there to make a name for themselves.
