jb4647
Any ideas on what streets these are in the photos?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Since the cars are traveling both ways, I would guess Main st.
MidtownCoog
That canopy makes me think it's Fannin, but all those lanes make me think it's Main St.Of course the bottom picutre is at Schlumberger near UH.

MidtownCoog
Engineering services. But they donated the building to UH. UH has admin offices there, and the Post Office also leases some space. The oil wells are still up in back, so Schlumberger may still do some work there. RedScare
I think it is Fannin St. The 10 story building looks like one on Fannin, and the canopy looks like the Montagu Hotel. Remember, the one way streets are a relatively recent phenomenon, since the 70s, I believe.

[the building with the canopy, unfortunatly is gone] Pics 2 & 3 show the Gulf building on the left-lit up in red on top- [currently Chase Bank}. A piece of trivia: the building on the extreme right in pics 2 & 3 is the original downtown Neimans-then it was a Palais Royal and now it has a CVS on the ground floor. Battlesteins was on the West side of main, with South Coast Life next to it (you can see the sign for that too). Also, Krupp & Tuffley and Bond clothing stores have signs on the right, which were at the SE corner of Main @ Walker. So, that would mean this is a picture taken looking North down Main Street, taken from South of Walker (as Battlesteins occupied space between Walker and Rusk). Great pictures !! Got any more? Guest danax
Thanks for sharing these great photos jb. I don't mean to nit-pick but, by the looks of those cars, the date would be more like early 60s. Gotta love those old street lights.
MidtownCoog
That canopy sure looks like the one that is still at 720 Fannin. We need to save those while we can. I lthink they look great. And that PanAm logo is great.

Heights2Bastrop
The only street they decorated downtown was Main Street. The ones shown in the above photos were the "new" decorations, and the last to be used. The previous ones were green garlands. I think they were lighted, and I think there was a smaller star in the center, but I'm not for sure. They also used to have street decorations like that along W 19th in "downtown" Heights. I can't place the car in the first photo but I'd guess early 60s GM; the car almost out of the pic in #3 is early 60s Ford, I think. Is that Oshman's on the corner at the left behind the cars? H-Town Man
The building on the far left in pics 2 and 3, with what looks like an Oshman's, was the Lamar Hotel. It is gone. The next building was the San Jacinto Hotel - also gone. Then Battelstein's, then South Coast Life (originally Carter Bldg., Houston's first skyscraper), which has been modernized, then Gulf, then the Great Jones Bldg., and in the distance you can see the Rice Hotel. The building on the extreme right, which nmainguy tells us housed Neiman Marcus, was originally the Kirby Bldg., here with its second facade (it is currently on #3). The building on the far right in the first picture has been destroyed, and is hopefully soon to be replaced by Houston Pavilions. The one on the left is Humble Oil. The shorter one next to it has been destroyed, and then you have Foley's.
TJones
Any ideas on what streets these are in the photos? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm pretty sure that is Main st. The big Miller High Life sign is a giveaway. The same sign. is in one of your father's other pictures you posted here. These are wonderful , wonderful pictures, BTW, the cars I am seeing in them are just too great for words. Please post more.

57Tbird
The building on the far left in pics 2 and 3, with what looks like an Oshman's, was the Lamar Hotel. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> OK...I'm going to jump in with my $.02 worth. I think everything that has been said about the location of these pictures is pretty accurate except for the above. Since Krupp & Tuffly was at 901 Main at Walker, it appears that Oshman's was right across the street on the southwest corner of Main and Walker. The Lamar Hotel was on the northwest corner of Main and Lamar, right across Lamar from Foley's. If you look closely at the stoplight at the right side of the #2 or #3 picture, there is a street sign below it with the letter M, which would be McKinney. So, these photos were taken at the intersection of Main and McKinney looking north. Photo #1 must have been taken just south of the intersection of Main and Polk, since that is part of the Humble building with the canopy over the sidewalk. That entrance was to a kind of customer service area where you could go in and get maps, travel information, football schedules, etc. Lane Bryant was right across the street on the northeast corner of Main and Polk. I'm pretty sure the back of the car in #1 is a 1960 Oldsmobile. It looks like one a good friend of mine had at that time. I've included a cropped picture of a previous aerial shot of downtown taken in 1958 I had posted earlier that might offer some perspective on these locations. Note the "Life" sign on the top of the building in both this picture and picture #1.
TJones
I wanted to state that the car in question was a 1959 oldsmobile, it is a "bubble top" which is kind of rare for that model olds in 1959, alot of them were either 4door or had the straighter back window for more headroom. You have to take into account the time of year also. A 1960 oldsmobile would have a 1961 plate ( which are white plates with black numbers)on it, not a 1960,(black plate with white numbers) even if the car was bought the first of September, when the new models came out. I am not saying that you are wrong, it's just that the time line doesn't fit.ok, we are really off subject now,and I am really over analyzing this whole thing, I just love the friggin cars I keep seeing in these old photos. Oh yeah, nice buildings also.

We had a 1958 98 (a real lemon). The body style changed quite a bit in 59; I was thinking that change came a couple of years later. 1959 Olds 98. As mentioned, would have been on the market by about September 58.

jb4647
The "Polk" sign is also visible in the photo as well. It would make sense that this would be Main and Polk because that is alos the intersection of the original Humble Oil bld. Most likely my father took the photo because my grandfather worked for Humble. He was probably waiting for him to get out of the office and took this as an opportunity to take a few night shots.Yesterday, I took the liberty of taking a few up-to-date photos of the same areas.Main and Polk
