What hotel brands would you like to see enter the Houston market?

Recommended Posts

yes of course, summertime is now forthcoming.  everyone, for whom is anyone, has their mindsets concentrated upon their own individual, and yet forthcoming pleasurable self interest.  summer vacations, summer spa retreats, 4th of july, galveston cruises, you name it..  and it's on it's merry way.

however, SUPER BOWL LI has indeed been awarded to the city of houston, tx.  as we all are acutely aware, there is still a shortage of premium luxury brand hotels throughout our fair city.  SUPER BOWL LI, shall indeed bring upon megawatt stars vs celebrities, high roller types, nfl owners, sports superstars, you name it.. they shall indeed, put forth the effort to get here to party.  nonetheless, where upon earth, are we going to put up these highly spoiled rascals?  just what on earth, has happened to our previous luxury hotel BUZZZZZZZ?

it was only about a couple of month's ago, that we were somewhat anticipating a slew of forthcoming announcements regarding prospective luxury hotel brands slated as per houston.  well, we've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting, to the very degree that it seems as though it was just a fantasy indeed.  ritz carlton, w hotel, possibly a fairmont, hey even a classic rendition of the nationally famous, peabody hotel of memphis, tn.  what happened as per these prospectives?

as we all are aware, super bowl's, can get here very quickly.  time is always of the essence, in regards to the hotel industry.  time to build / construct, time to prepare as per the masses, time to instill the mindset of first class quality throughout..  you get it?

does anyone of our cool vs creative haifer's.. care to share any news concerning any forthcoming luxury hotel brands, slated as per houston?  please bare in mind, SUPER BOWL LI is indeed forthcoming.

W is looking at westcreek supposedly which should come as no suprise to anyone here

Ritz would be nice although i definitely see it as more of an uptown hotel - downtown may have some momentum but it cannot touch the high-end appeal that exists uptown

i wouldn't be surprised if a few high end boutique hoteliers weren't kicking around ideas around town

Actually quite surprised that something like Ritz or W hasn't surfaced given the jump in hotel demand in this town.

I'm also a bit surprised more discount chains (La Quinta as an example) haven't shown up in Midtown in and around the Spur and Main Street?  Perhaps that is next (although quite a few places already have committed to Downtown).  I suppose there is greater demand closer to GRB at this time, and the property values are still not to the level that would deter a mid-level hotel chain from building a 10-15 floor building?

You're right it's not a surprise. About a year ago, Urbannizer posted a conceptual rendering for a W Epsilon and it's location looked to be right in Westcreek. I wouldn't be surprised if their finalized plans, whenever they maybe, is similar to that.

Philly is also getting a W, and it's going to be a pretty good height. I would imagine the Houston one wouldn't be too far off in size and scale from that.

Before the recession, W was rumored to have looked in River Oaks District. This isn't too far off.

I think a Ritz would work in Downtown if it is close to GRB. Block 251 would be a good spot.

Other hotels I'd like to eventually see in Downtown are:

1. W Hotel and Residences

2. Mandarin Oriental

3. Fairmont

4. Living Shangri-La

  • 2 months later...

New Orleans has not one but TWO W hotels..? Wtf. One is in the process of being converted to a La Meridien though. Which is another great hotel Houston lacks.. We have more people visit Houston than any other city in Texas. Yet, Dallas, Austin, and soon San Antonio, will beat us to the punch at landing a W and other high end hotels. Surely we can support more of these fine hotels?

I've always wondered why Galveston doesn't have a nice big Marriott or Hyatt (style) resort on or near the beach somewhere?  Granted that Galveston's beach and water aren't the most beautiful in the world, but then is Bastrop really that great?  Surely Galveston draws WAY more tourists and people with the potential to spend big money than a Bastrop (Hyatt Lost Pines Resort) as an example.  Currently I think only the San Louis is anything remotely like a "resort"

As for hotels:

-Would think 1-2 big name luxury types are on the edge about to announce a planned hotel in the Galleria area.

-I'm surprised there isn't at least 1-2 more big hotels in the TMC - I know one is planned, but how many years has it been since something decent was built in this market?

-I would also think another decent sized hotel could be supported in and around the MFAH and environs.  It would draw people who wanted a quieter stay than Downtown and also guests for the TMC.

one of the biggest shortfalls of the montrose/museum district is the complete lack of hotels... those areas are prime locations for boutique hotels. a longterm goal of mine is to develop a very cool boutique hotel in montrose.

btw i heard W was weighing between westcreek and blvd place (this was several months ago though so no clue if that's still the case).

A Palace Inn downtown would be spectacular. Hourly rates available, of course.

The Palace Inn on Westheimer near Hwy 6 has a sign up that says "Luxury at it's finest".  A "W" or a ZaZa just can't top that.

Personally, I'm holding out for my parent's favorite place when I was growing up....a KOA.

Resorts take a lot of space and that's probably not available as cheaply in Galveston as it is in the hill country.  You'd be surprised how many resorts there are all over the hill country and how popular (and packed) they are, particularly on weekends and holidays.

Too true about Montrose/Museum District..

That's great to hear! Either of those sound good to me. I figured a W was more of an "uptown" crowd vs downtown. BLVD Place is probably about ready to get a second tower moving now that the Hanover is winding down, and Westcreek had those two properties fronting San Felipe available.. I guess time will tell.

Well, the resort doesn't have to have a golf course+horseback trails and all that other stuff.

There is room in or around the East Beach and also way out past the end of the Seawall for a resort.  My guess is Galveston has simply not been very receptive to the idea?  Since it is Galveston.

Take away too much of the fun stuff and it's not really a resort, just a big hotel.  We've got plenty of those.

I'd guess it has more to do with the economics.  Maybe getting enough land together to do more than a hotel with a swimming pool is too much or maybe the prospect of the whole thing being underwater every once in a while is not enticing.

something is really wrong whenever a city as big as the city of houston.. just cannot seem to forecast acquiring a W HOTEL, RITZ CARLTON, LE MERIDIEN, or any other high end hotel flag / brand, that are currently surrounding our state.  and the really bad thing is.. no one seems to have a clue as to what the problem is...

I wonder if there is some fear by the high end places that Houston's boom won't last much longer and isn't worth the risk.

^Nah.  (to both posts above me).

If we remember Ritz was in Houston.  It left because it was lacking in the numbers needed.  I think people are more willing to spend on quality hotels now more than ever.  Perhaps they will stay for fewer days, but spend more on a nightly rate.

I've never thought the "W" was the end all, be all of hotels.  Not sure why its so greatly desired?

We'll get some more nice hotels.  Fret not fellow Houstonians.
