Guilty Pleasures: Movies/Music

Good Day HAIF.

I was just curious about some of you folks, and what might be a guilty pleasure like a movie or a song that you probably shouldn't like, but do. I'm not expecting anything creepy like "I'm 45 years old and "Wheels on the bus" is my favorite song, listen to it everyday!" Just maybe a current pop song that is stuck in your head or a pretty awful movie that you might be ashamed to admit you have it on DVD, Blue-Ray, and Digital Copy. So, spill the beans.

Well, I guess I'll start.

Muriel's Wedding. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110598/)

I was bored on a sunday and we passed this over on Netflix. My friend said she had seen it when she was little (back when Kroger had VHS rentals). So I fell in love! This movie is just good and hilarious all around. Every character is awesome, and I love that it's in Australia. I could watch this movie at least twice a week. The fact that it has almost only ABBA songs is the icing on the cake. Probably my favorite movie of all time. Also, a great movie to enjoy some wine or a vice of your choice to.

just between us.........i watched "the craft" over and over for ten years.  i bought the soundtrack.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoM4OXQVCcE  i watched it when i drank, which was often, and marveled at how similar the methods of the craft were to southern fundamentalist magical thinking.  plus, i was really into cool black clothing.

oh, but i don't hide that one.  i do hide my gregg araki movies from certain friends and family.  every now and then, i have to bring out "the living end", "doom generation", "nowhere", "totally f****ed up", "splendor", and more recently "kaboom".  araki used music and settings in his movies that i thought were unique to me and my circle of friends here in houston.  i was amazed to see the same type of subculture parameters in a movie (in and about) LA.

i still have a few hundred christian cds from my youth and twenties.  some of it is so bad.  every now and then i just need a little amy grant or resurrection band.

Doom Generation, ha! I tried to watch it but the "whatever" culture was too astronomical for me to finish it.

I have had a recent obsession with new synth pop songs. I will post some links later, but here are the songs and titles.

"Fireshrine" - Purity Ring

"The Mother we share" - CHVRCHES

"Royals" - Lorde

They're pretty awful but they are so much fun!

Here are a couple of songs I've been listening to. Don't mind sharing with you all, but reluctant to share with my friends.

I don't know if your one of those people (like me) where a music video can make or break a song, but I feel like the video doesn't do it justice.

This is another one that is really catchy.

She actually writes a lot of songs for Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and someone else I forgot.

This one is pretty awful. It has a heavy r&b sound, with some pretty weird/dark lyrics.

I have to be honest, I really don't get the music video. I've even watched it sober...

This one i'm not too proud of. It's so tween and awful. I have to start the song over again when I hear it in the car.

i like the last one (sans the stupid lyrics).  her voice has an interesting quality.  i'd like to hear her sing grown up songs.

i'd forgotten i had a thing for kylie minogue and olivia newton john until i listed to your video posts.  i usually do not share that either.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHGaW8lBlSk

my "cassette" walkman had newton john's album "physical" playing for hours on end as our family traveled across the country on family trips.....that and amy grant.  now that i think of it, i listened almost exclusively to female singers until my late teens....figures.

My biggest guilty pleasure? I still go to numbers on Friday nights. But it's not so surprising actually, I used to stay up every Saturday night listening to the live club feed from 6400 on 93q.

I had 104 on in the car the other day, one of my friends was in the car and I started singing along to some ke$ha his words "I can't believe that anyone who likes nitzer ebb can actually listen to this crap" his wife laughed at me :-(

I can't help but watch the movie hackers whenever it is on.

I like "Lies" better than "The Mother We Share", but either way I'd have trouble classifying CHVRCHES as a guilty pleasure (then again, I've always had trouble with the concept of guilty pleasures in general). I assume you know they're going to be at House of Blues at the end of November?

I wonder how many HAIFers have numbers as a guilty pleasure? I've been once in the last year.

Speaking of numbers, a long time guilty pleasure is the song "Warm Leatherette".

Every time I hear it I picture the video montage they play at numbers, which is a mix of car crashes and people snorting Ajax. Also is the visual of the guy in the long leather trench coat who just stands there to twirl.

I am compelled to cast my guilty pleasure club vote for Rich's. It was so big and new at the time, and the bathrooms always seemed cleaner. Call me high maintenance, but clean matters when doing coke in bathrooms.

wow, Boytronic, ditto on that one.  Major guilty pleasures of me and my childhood BFF was Yaz and Tones on Tail (Go!) especially when we were getting ready to go out.

Does perpetual youth retire in the Woodlands? Bam... At this point in time I would hope for a high five from redscare. One can dream.

hahahaha...  According to Redscare it apparently first enters a  period of pre-retirement in the Heights, where it builds man-cave garages and takes up bicycling.

Here's another synth pop for you guys!

This one is quite awful. I accidentally discovered it under "suggested" for the CHVRCHES video. I love the music video, it's so weird, that its actually cool. I only love the song because of the video.

And I tried showing it to some of my friends but all of their reactions were the same... "I can never get that 6 minutes of my life back". Lol they don't understand fashion & art, so I have forgiven them.

I can honestly say that I'm 45 and sing Wheels on the Bus on a regular basis...but then I've got a 2-year old daughter.

Don't know if this counts as a guiltly pleasure, but I haven't been able to get this one out of my head since I first saw it...someone please help....
