102-Story Tower Planned

Recommended Posts

I heard today that a developer attempted to build a 102 story tower in Dallas but got shot down by the DFW airport and now he is planning it for Houston.

Can anyone confirm?

Nativehoustonian said something similar in another thread:

It is s only a rendering. Once completed I believe it will appear very sleek. It seems it may be almost 800 feet high. It is also bringing more jobs to Houston. I think Hines is next at 609 Main St. I have heard that a very tall skyscraper will go up by Minute Maid Park because it is out of HOU airport flight pattern. With the tax abatements a lot of buildings have already been announced. I believe a little boom is coming for downtown. I wonder what Trump is up to?

I kinda doubt this. It has been tried before. Chase Tower was originally designed for more than its 75 stories but the FAA nixed that idea at the time.  I think 75 is as tall as we are going to ever see in Houston.

That story is also considered to be an urban myth.

nativehoustonian's post also mentions Trump...Not sure if it means anything but there were rumors that he planned to build a tower in Dallas, but nothing new since 2007.

trump builds some butt-ugly buildings..............

800 feet high? Chase is over 1,060 feet tall.

I highly doubt a 102 story building would be only 800 feet.

Seems fishy.

Chase Tower is 1,002 feet and the 800 foot estimate nativehoustonian gave was for Chevron's new tower. With his comment out of context it gets a bit confusing. Some other person also alluded to a 100+ story, but they seemed like just some nut job Chron commenter.

#3 Williams tower.... 901 ft... 69 stories.

#4 Bank of America ..... 780 ft.... 58 stories

800 ft and 100 stories doesn't jive together.

Hobby is 8 miles away and downtown just isn't that wide.... There are no airport imposed building height restrictions here.

...edit. Looks like someone beat me to it

Love field has the height restrictions not DFW.  Most of there 50 floors buildings are under 700 feet. The Bank of America tower is out of the height restrictions.  The original plan was to build 2 twin towers (Bank of America) towers but got killed during the bust.  I do not know why any developer would build a 102 floor skyscraper in Dallas.  Their downtown is pretty much empty.  Elm Place at 52 floors and 628 feet tall has been sitting there empty.  They don't know what to do with it.  It has asbestos and was built in 1965.  I could see a tall high rise near Minute Maid Park.  The view would be fantastic.

Even if its just a rumor, its still exciting to think of the possibilities.  In terms of financing and construction, it would seem logical to get these projects started asap.  Not sure what a developer in Houston has to gain from waiting right now.

But again, I know that securing loans and tenants is a whole different challenge.

Even if it were true, How would a +100 floor skyscraper be out of the HOU pattern on the southern (closer), edge of Downtown?

I seriously would take anything posters say about proposed buildings with a grain of salt. Unless they are the usual good 3 sources... forgot their names, and way too lazy to look them up.

And if a developer couldn't built a 102 floor tower in Dallas, why give up? There are plenty of places that would take one in their metro area, i.e. Fort Worth. And then say oh well can't do it in Dallas, guess I'll shoot for Houston. Doubt it. and if Trump were fishing around in Houston, he would annouce it. Did his NO tower ever get built? If he were to build in Texas, it would be Dallas first. Print it.

@ lockmat: What is your source?

@ montrose: I don't know about Trump, but Houston seems much more likely to get a 102 story tower than Dallas.

If our economies stay the same, yeah, I bet Houston would get one before Dallas. I was saying if Trump were to build anything like a hotel/condo/ego tower in Texas, Dallas would be his first choice. The first thing Trump would build in Houston would probably be a golf course with a smaller hotel.

One of my vendors. His company provides equipment necessary for any high rises, so they're always part of the bidding processes. He said they have quarterly meetings to discuss projects they're bidding on and what's in the pipeline.

I can't remember if he said they actually bid on this one or not. Let me contact him.

Edit: he said they haven't bid on it. It's just planned

With the tax abatements to move people in Downtown.  Something could happen around Ruiz or Hamilton street.  East of Minute Maid park.  I know form the sixty floor JP Morgan Tower you can see the entire city.  With a 1,000 foot residential high rise the views would be incredible.  That property will be sold in months.

Coincidence? Look what I found when google for this?

Blog comment from over a week ago:

Great this is a coveted block and would be excellent for about a 102-story power tower.

Macy’s should buy the old Sakowitz building and convert into a fabulous new Macy’s, albeit with a smaller footprint for Downtown Houston. At about 260,000sq ft, it would be perfect for Macy’s.

Edit: under the name "honest truth" this swamploter said the same exact thing. They keep bringing up Macy's and Bloomingdales too.

Hmmm...

Can anyone draw a 100-story building near minute maid park and the Hilcorp site into the skyline?

A supertall near minute maid would be awesome of course, but would look kind of strange so far from the other towers.

I contacted someone on the planning commission and they said they've heard rumors of a super tall structure but to their knowledge no plans have been submitted, yet.

update: they heard the rumor from an external source, not from within the planning department.

I'm not a journalist and I'm not asking for for anyone to take this as concrete evidence. Just grabbing what I can find.

you're taking peoples' comments and trying to make it become reality.  I won't even mention the 120 story tower I heard about.
