Yale Street Market: Retail Center At 195 Yale St.

There is an endangered rock beetle that resides only under unsold stones and only in that one particular 4 acre area! I for one can not bear the thought of the endangered rock beetle losing more of its precious habitat! I am going to start a petition to save the rock yard so that the area can be kept in its semi-developed state as it has been for at least the last several years!

Every year migrating birds flying through Houston look down upon this site and continue flying by it! Can you imagine the devastation and confusion the birds would have if this spring on their return migration the stone yard is gone and construction vehicles occupy this space?!

Please somebody think of the the children! If those project actually happens our children's children will not be able to see this property in the same state that I have for the past 5-6 years!

The Walmart haters will never stop this juggernaut, now. This area will be a huge success. Centrally located, Walmart anchor, lots of square footage. It's all over but the crying. Once this parcel is developed, even the "think of the wheelchair riders" argument by s3mh will be shot down in flames, as the developers of this parcel will place sidewalks on all 3 sides. They'll probably even plant trees!

No matter what the haters say, this will be a plus for the Heights. The only Heights retail currently is the limited small shops of kitsch, such as stationery, records, used books and furniture, and a tiny hardware store. While they have their place, amkkkctual products that people use on a day to day basis are nowhere to be found, with the exception of the Taylor Street Target shopping center, and now these centers. Even the people who complain will occasionally shop there.

What's more concerning is that this will disrupt the historic nature of the site. It has been a rock thingy since the Allen Bros. landed on the concrete lined banks of buffalo bayou.

don't forget there's the retail over by 19th and Yale too, but I don't think we can call that "the Heights" since there's a 5 or 6 story hospital, and a 6 or 7 story office building right across the street, which are both way out of the character of the historic heights...

What the Haters are really afraid of is that some youngsters will actually work here, put themselves through school, become a manager or a crack salesman and buy one of the affordable shacks in the historic district. There goes the neighborhood.

At least the buyer of this site found out that you can get more useable sq ft by putting in parking above the site and building more than a one story strip mall.

If the rumors are true and Fresh Market is going to be a tenant, HEB will have lost out on the Heights three times over with no real chance left for them in the area.

There was an HEB in the Heights (11 Street and Rutland). They built a brand new store and then left. The building was torn down and there is now a bank on the property. Obviously HEB deemed The Heights not profitable.

This potentially whole foods esque grocrey being touted will prevent the same outrage... until it turns out to be something else, then S3mh and the rest of the haters will find something to get all worked up about...

I hope San Jacinto stone relocates though... I like them.

I had been wondering what the story was on that corner, and why a bank branch would need ~100 parking spots. I mean, who actually goes to the bank anymore?

I remember that HEB being TINY, smaller than the one on 18th, always hard to find parking though....and no beer or wine. But looking at the bank parcel now, it seems a lot bigger......I don't think HEB had all the frontage on Rutland the bank has now, I seem to remember it being a rectangular parcel rather than the L-shape.

They'll open up an Aldi's instead. Stand back and watch the heads explode.

There is another stone place on Yale closer to 610. Not as good as SJStone however.

The property is the same. Its just that the actual store was only on the part of the parcel that touches Allston. The parking lot extended down Rutland north of the store. If you didnt get a good spot you would have to walk down the lot toward 11th to get to the front of the actual store.

I was there yesterday buying some rocks (hopefully old enough to satisfy the HAHC), and I asked the proprietor if he had found a new location yet. He just smiled and said "Nope". I took that to mean bye-bye SJS. Incidentally my partner safely detoured our Suburban loaded with a half-ton of rocks ALL the way down Koehler until we finally reached Heights for our left turn across the Bridge Unknown To RUDH. Whew, I was worn out after we got through the massive five-car traffic jam at the light.

Eh...they lost the Walmart battle so no doubt active RUDH membership has dwindled as the more rational folks realize development is going to happen and move on with their lives.

I think the Walmart battle was really about Heights folks being incensed that Walmart considered them "Walmart people". It was not about winning, just protesting loud enough to convince others that they were not "those people".

I think its funny on RUDH sites when they post about a new midrise development and all the anti-development NIMBY's that form their core and have nothing to do with the stated goals of the organization start posting negative coments untill whoever the hell is running the place comes up and says "No wait, this is what we are for now!"

How does one get into the queue for RUDH evil project of the year?

Is there a link that lists the prerequisites, preferred shadowy associations, and targeted council members?

With the pace of our cities growth they must be working overtime.
