Gatti's for sure is still around I know in Clear Lake. Also still in Rice near the stadium last I saw.

Del Taco is long gone from Texas, but alive and well in California. I saw several in San Diego last weekend.

Weren't Showbiz and Chuck E. Cheese two different companies that merged at some point? Neither was very good; the only real attraction there was the games.

BayouCityGirl

I saw it in California as well when I went there not too long ago. :)

I thought Del Taco was in Dallas.

Isn't there going to be a "El Pollo Loco" here in Houston coming...I think way later in the year. I read it somewhere.

Mr. Gatti's is/was all the way down here? ... They're still going strong in Kentucky. There's a Mr. Gatti's by Ft. Knox and a Gattitown (same thing) in Lexington. I know of at least five in Louisville.
I'm not really impressed by the place...

ssullivan

I'm pretty sure there's a Gatti's at the corner of University and Greenbriar across from the southwest corner of the Rice campus. I think it's a delivery/carry out only location in an old converted house.

Did Houston every have RuBy Tuesday's?
Or Hardee's?
Or Carl's Jr?

MidtownCoog

There was a Del Taco on Edgebrook. It's a credit union now.

What about that crazy fish and chips place?

It was called Alfreds or something like that.

BayouCityGirl

Posted Friday, August 5, 2005 at 11:52 AM

We had a Ruby Tuesdays' on Westheimer (near Toys R US)

Hardees...mm..not sure. I don't think we ever had a Carl's Jr. but I do remember when I lived in El Paso we got "KTLA" (for free) and I'd watch the Carl Jr. Ads (if its not in your face, it doesn't belong on your sandwich) -I think that was the ad.

From what I hear Hardee's sounds gross. I remember having Del Taco around the corner from me. (I lived in Fondren Southwest) I used to go to Mr. Gatti's by Braes Bayou (I think)..

What I remember of Mr. Gatti's is that they had a big screen and they'd show "The little Rascals" and old newsreels.

I remember my bday party at Showbiz (with the bear) :)

I think its cool we have the One of a kind "Whataburger" :)
and our Kolaches (which is now expanding)...even though Canadian I wish we had a Tim Hortons!

I saw Taco Bueno in the metroplex.

citykid09

How did you get KTLA in El Paso?

BayouCityGirl

Posted Friday, August 5, 2005 at 11:59 AM

I lived in an apartment and we had basic cable. Just like some stations get WGN, El Paso gets KTLA for free. I enjoyed watching the weather and traffic and news. :P
Mountain time zone production and airing shows out there is weird out there.

When Star Trek Deep Space Nine came on we got it at 10:30 PM on ABC (on other affiliates it came on UPN) whereas Voyager came on UPN with no problem. (which we'd get Voyager at 11:30 AM on a Saturday)

gatti's is still in clear lake, i prefer cici's or double daves for the buffet though.
little caeser's still around?

del taco is going strong in the midwest. ate there once, never again. hardee's is ok, but i don't mind not having it here. and i'm very glad we don't have krystals or white castle.

hopefully they'll open more raising cane's here, had it in new orleans and those are some good, fast tenders.

Hardee's is gross. Glad we don't have around here, although really wouldn't make any difference either way. I've always thought of it as a poor man's jack in the Box. Yeah that good.

I remember that Gatti's near A&M. Went there once after a swim meet. Remember having a good time. I think we were there late enough that SNL was on and I remember Dennis Miller was still the host of the Weekend Update. Oh, how time flies.

citykid09

They closed the Gatti's near A&M many years ago, then they opened a big one in Bryan, about 13 years later they closed that one and opened a new one in College Station.

The Credit Union on Edgebrook was a Taco Bueno. i think the company was dallas-based. it may have been a del taco too later but it was built as Taco Bueno.

Maybe Alfie's fish and chips?..i remember eating at one on Broadway in galveston.
Their logo was the canadian mountie from the cartoons.

What about H Salt fish and chips? They are still around in California. I know their were a few here in the early 70's.

And the little places..about the same size as an old box shaped jack in the box but were made to look like windmills with cedar shake siding. can't remember the name seems like it started with a W.

Posted Friday, August 5, 2005 at 3:28 PM

Back in the day, it was called Der Weinerschnitzel. There was one on Chimney Rock & W. Belfort. It was an A shaped building and you'd drive through between the legs of the A. There were a few seats outside but no other seating.

There was a Del Taco on S. Braeswood just west of Hillcroft that opened brand new around 1979. It lasted a few years and was gone.

I also remember Alfie's Fish & Chips, & H. Salt Fish & Chips. ALSO Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips. Fish & Chips just seemed to be all the rage in the 70s, they came in to Houston in force and then most of them went out of business pretty quickly. The Alfie's on Fondren between SW Frwy & Bellaire lasted the longest to my knowledge. I think it lasted into the 90s.

Anyone remember Zuider Zee? It was also a fried seafood type of place but it was more of a sit-down-and-order restaurant. Not sure where it was exactly but my faded memory suggests somewhere on 59 near Sharpstown.

How about....
--Lumburger or Crumburger (?) on Bellaire -- don't think they lasted too long. They served "burgers" which were really kind of like sloppy Joes if I remember correctly.
--Jaime's on the corner of N. Braeswood & Main. They put up a bunch of billboards before they opened. All they said were, Jaime's is coming. Really built up curiosity! Then they opened, served burgers & beans, at least that's what we ate the ONE time we went. Their advertising was enough to get my family to go once & once only. It was probably around 1969 or so.
--Wyatt's Cafetaria. There was one in Sharpstown Mall, and one on the corner of W. Belfort and (then) Post Oak (now 610)
--Romano Cafeteria (which got taken over by Luby's)
--Piccadilly Cafetaria (was that in Northline Mall? I know it was in a mall, just can't remember which one)

Can you tell we ate at a lot of cafeterias when I was growing up?

OH! And I just remembered, Neil's Ice Cream in the 80s. Man that place was hoppin!

Neil was some guy who came here from New York I think. Opened a bunch of ice cream places and did a booming business. Then he sold them all and made a #$@#$load of money. I think he and his brother opened a kiddie amusement center in one of the malls after that but I don't think it lasted very long. After that, he was gone.

And, by the way, so were his ice cream shops. I don't remember what happened but shortly after he sold them, they all closed.

White Castle Burgers (80s)

more cafeterias...Furr's anyone?

BayouCityGirl

Furrs!! LOL! I went to the one..okay you know.. El Paso had a Furr's right down the street from me. Wasn't too bad. More or less like a Luby's.

How about Shakey's pizza (I think it was Shakey's)

I vaguely remember my stepfather working at one. (when he had a mustache and the 80's haircut)...

Original Timmy Chan's

Posted Friday, August 5, 2005 at 5:52 PM

I know it was already listed above, but Pipe Organ Pizza was one of my all-time faves as a kid. I only got to go there once or twice, but it was a treat to see (and hear) the seemingly 100-ft long organ in there.

Piccadilly's Cafeteria used to be a favorite of my grandfather's.

How 'bout this one...Texas Tumbleweeds. I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet. I believe I ate there once or twice when I was a kid. I believe that was my first steakhouse.

Here's another: Sizzler. I believe that was the name of the place on Fuqua at Sabo. It later turned into a Po Folks. I think its latest incarnation was a fajita place.

My grandpa (lover of cafeterias, remember) also used to take me to a place in Pasadena called "Smorgasbord" a few times. It was an all-you-can-eat cafeteria where the food moved around on a conveyor belt.

Of course, one of our favorite subjects here, Monterrey House.

I don't know if it's still there, but we used to eat at the City Cafeteria on occasion, on College(?) near Old Galveston Rd in South Houston.

Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor in Almeda Mall

Sambo's. I think there used to be one there at Airport and the Gulf Freeway.

Do we still have Mary Lee Donuts? I've always been a faithful Shipleys man, so I never ate there, but it always looked appetizing as a kid.

Does anyone remember this one: a BBQ place on Old Galveston Rd near the South Loop, just a little shack between the road and the railroad tracks. I believe it was the Whistle Stop(?) or something similar to that, anyways. When I used to go to work with my dad on the weekends as a kid, that BBQ sandwich was the one thing that would brighten an otherwise boring day.

How about Three Gables Hamburgers in South Houston/Pasadena? Ate there a few times as a kid too.

And last but not least, the short order grill at Mimosa Lanes off the Gulf Freeway near Airport. I used to eat a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches there when I was a kid. I believe the old Mimosa Lanes site is now a hotel.

Checkers was definitely down in League City years ago. I think its a car dealership now. I went to one in Orlando a couple of years ago and realized it had no way to compete with James Coney around here. Mary Lee Donuts still exists, there is one on San Felipe near the Amegy Bank building. I think its a Mary Lee, but the more I think about it, the more I think might be something different.

BayouCityGirl

Posted Friday, August 5, 2005 at 6:10 PM

Princes Hamburgers (only one left on the freeway) -anyone daring to try it after Lakewood Church lets out?

Mary Lee Donuts are everywhere. One down the street on Dairy Ashford, another in Sugar Land, TX.

I LOVED Sambos as a kid. they had pancakes with ice cream on them and cool stuff for kids...cartoon menus or hats or something. I think there was one on NASA 1 too.

Shakey's - there was one on Nasa 1.

Sizzler - one was on Kingspoint behind Almeda Mall - its the Kidney Center now
If you are mentioning Sizzler then you gotta mention Bonanza.

Bonanza - One was at I-45 and Belfort/Howard. Its a "gentleman's club" now.

PoFolks sure came and left quick. I remember going there several times.

I used to love Orange Julius'..one was in Memorial City mall.

Speaking of cafeterias...STILL! What does anyone think of the Dinner Bell on Lawndale at Wayside?? I have eaten there a couple a times..its like going into a time warp...I don't think anything has changed in there since 1967.

Yeah, I think maybe that was a Bonanza there on Fuqua, which later became a PoFolks.

I just remembered another place: the Steak & Egg Kitchen at Telephone Rd and I-45. I ate there a number of times when I went to UH. We went there for the cheap prices, and because the place seemed to be in a time warp.

There also used to be a 24-hr Taco Bell on Wayside in the early 90's. It was one of the few 24-hr places we knew of near UH at the time. It was a good place when you had the munchies; even I could usually afford the 39-cent bean burrito (although I did have to bum change a few times to get one).

Applebees is being built by West Oaks mall. :)
HORRAY!! I like it there!

Speaking of West Oaks Mall. There is NOTHING left of that store. Mervyins is now gone, its all fashion in the mall (and Dept stores), NO bookstore, there is a cell phone cart around every inch of the mall.

So unless you want clothes or something to eat not even worth going to West Oaks anymore :(

They took out Kaybee as well, Carlton Cards, Meryvins, Blockbuster Music, I heard Disney store was going out soon too.

okay sorry back on topic.

Bennigans is going out it seems. I liked it there too! :(

Applebee's? A low-rate TGI Fridays. I lived in Little Rock for 6 months, and they had one of these. Terrible. Just terrible. I think that is why you find them in small towns. They have no competition.

BTW, they had a couple in Houston in the mid 80s. One was at FM 1960 and Kuykendahl. It sucked 20 years ago, too.

They still have Applebee's here. I know they aren't the best places to eat, but I have to admit I love them! I am so excited that they are building one next to West Oaks (over on the JC Penney side), but I have to wonder why there, if the mall is basically self-destructing? I wonder if they are going to tear it down?

The Oriental Chicken Wrap-Up is my favorite, I get it every time! :)

P.S. Thanks texasboy!! :D

Getting a little off topic, but I drove by West Oaks yesterday and was shocked to see Mervyn's closed and JC Penney with going out of business signs up. They no sooner finish a huge renovation and two anchor stores are going out? Doesn't speak well for the mall at all. When I lived in Westchase I always enjoyed shopping at West Oaks, and the last time I was there when the renovation was nearing completion I thought it was looking very good.

West Oaks probably had too many department store anchors. There used to be six, then after Palais Royal left in 2000 their spot sat empty for a few years until Linens & Things went into it. Now there will still be three department store anchors, provided Dillard's, Sears, and Foley's (Macy's) stay. Those three, plus Alamo Drafthouse, and the smaller stores might be enough to keep the place hanging on for a while. That mall does have a history of trying to find its niche -- it originally was built as a suburban Galleria with stores like Saks and Lord & Taylor. After Saks and Lord & Taylor left and were more middle-class stores, the mall did seem to be more successful.

I was inside West Oaks when I saw Meryvins was gone. I noticed today going to W.Oaks that JcPenny's had their "going out of business" sale. I keep hearing prices for rent is too high.

That mall does have a history of trying to find its niche -- it originally was built as a suburban Galleria with stores like Saks and Lord & Taylor. After Saks and Lord & Taylor left and were more middle-class stores, the mall did seem to be more successful.

I hate some of these unknown stores. After the renovations I was sure the mall was going to be better too. Sad that it looks like they are all leaving. :(

I remember eating breakfast at some restaurant called "Champ's" as a child. I liked the little train that would go around near the ceiling, and it would pass through some shelves filled with stuff. I think they closed down a few years back(I think there were multiple locations).

Oh, and yes, I also remember this place called JoJo's, which was pretty good(This was near the Fondren area, I think, where i used to live). I don't know if they are still open, though.

Anyone remember Barnacle Bill's Seafood Market, 3414 Katy Fwy, (Heights/Studemont)?

I don't, I wasn't here yet. I was reading an old Houston Post from 1975 that I found in a box and saw the ad. Lobster Tails; 4.99 lb, shrimp; 1.59 lb. Crawfish; 50c lb.

To put these prices in perspective; leisure suits were going for 19.99, oil/lube/filter; 4.59, gallon of milk; 99c.

I bet no one else remembers this: There was a restaurant on the corner of W. Belfort & Chimney Rock next to the (then) Weingartens which had little horses on springs arranged in a semi circle for kids to sit on while they ate their burgers.

I don't know what else they served or what the name of the place was but I LOVED that place back in the early/mid 60s.

Also I remember Bonanza -- they were all over town. There was one on Stella Link just inside the Loop that stayed in business at least till 1980.

And speaking of Stella Link inside the loop, remember Alfred's? It was a venerable "Kosher Style" Deli and I believe it stayed in business till Alfred died. His son owns Kahn's Deli in the village.

I lived close by so we walked or rode our bikes up there a lot, mainly on the way to Westbury Square to go eat at Ruppleheimer's. I think the restaurant you're thinking about was Britton's or something like that. When I was a teenager, my first job was a clerk at the TG&Y, next door to Weingarten's!

Oh I loved Princes. There was also another burger place back in the late 50s/early 60s on Bellaire/Holcombe near or in Southside Place or West U on the north side of the street called Price's. It was not a great burger like Princes, but more a a standard flat burger like a regular McDonald's burger. I seem to recall they were an early adopter of the drive through concept.

And speaking of great hamburgers, I love the flavor of Bellaire Broiler Burger. Are they still around?

How about Grandy's?

There was also a Steak 'N' Shake on Kirby just north of the SW Fwy for a very short time. Whenever I drive through the midwest on I-70, I always make a point to stop at one.

Anyone remember Allbritton's Cafeteria on Waugh (just south of the American General building)? It was a white stucco Streamline Moderne building, much like the Carnation milk plant next door.

They had great traditional Texas foods - chicken fried steak with cream gravy, greens, jalapeno cornbread, cheese grits. The women who worked the steam table were appearently installed about the same time the place opened. As you made your way through the line they'd say:

"Serve you."
"Serve you."

with absolutely no expression or inflection. They each must have uttered that phrase hundreds of thousands of times.

Joyful transplants flock to Carvel ice cream store for soft-serve specialty; more will open in Houston
By DAVID KAPLAN
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

Before Linda Eppolito opened her ice cream shop in west Houston, a stranger knocked on the door and asked, breathlessly, "Is this really Carvel? The Carvel from New York?"

Since opening less than a year ago, Eppolito has seen many East Coast transplants walk in. Currently, they comprise three out of 10 of her customers. Initially, the percentage of East Coast natives was much greater.

Maybe it's the taste of the soft-serve ice cream, or maybe it's the memories. Something makes ex-East Coast residents go ga-ga when they discover a Carvel in their neighborhood.

Oh yes! I remember Carvel. Someone I knew at that time they opened (must have been the mid 80s) raved about how wonderful Carvel was when she was growing up in New York. It lasted about 5 minutes -- correct me if I'm wrong but it's just soft serve ice cream, right?

Reminds me of White Castle Hamburgers. It's the kind of thing that brings back youthful memories for people who grew up somewhere else, not because it was so delicious but because it was what ate when they were a kid.

They open one here, everyone who grew up with it gets excited and goes a couple of times and that's it -- not enough to keep the place(s) in business, because, after all, they're not really good, just nostalgic, and they can't compete with other (better) places that are here.

OK, all you Carvel & White Castle lovers, go ahead and flame me. I'm a native Houstonian and I just don't get the attraction for either of these restaurants.

What can y'all tell me about Monterey House? Was it very good? I know that when I was a kid, it was the only TexMex place my family went to - apparently the craze hadn't taken off, or there just weren't many options in the 1960 area. H2B, what can you tell me about Someburger? Do you remember where their locations were in the Heights? The reason why I ask is that back in the 50's-60's, an aunt and two uncles of mine used to run a Someburger in the Heights. My uncle still has jars full of the wartime silver nickels that he picked out of the change. They were Italian, if that rings a bell... perhaps it was the one you went to!

That is a very astute observation, lowspark. I remember having wonderful experiences as a kid at places that I am reluctant to associate with now, the prime example being McDonald's. My mom says that whenever we drove by I would shout "Hambuhgahhhh!" and I know for a fact that up until about fourth grade, a Happy Meal was the greatest meal on earth (I can still remember the smell of the food when my dad came to elementary school to eat lunch with me and brought a Happy Meal).

**** WARNING H-Town Man is about to wax philosophical WARNING ****

To me it says so much about the innocence of childhood that our standards were so low and a few colorful decorations and a man with a smile at the counter could make us so happy. Perhaps, if we were to step back far enough, we would see that the difference in quality between a McDonald's hamburger and a prime steak is really only very miniscule, and that it is the vanity and falseness that we have acquired that makes one so intolerable, and the other so essential. I know certain relatives of mine who have largely retained this innocence through most of their lives, and still happily enjoy certain things that I have rejected through my sophistication (especially after going to college with a bunch of rich kids). In a way then, we are the authors of our own misery, and even the most seemingly hideous conditions of life could be made happy and pleasant if we were to recover this innocence and naivete...

This same idea could even be extended to... ARCHITECTURE. When I was growing up, I never noticed anything wrong with the "cheap," "bland," "prosaic" buildings of the suburbs where I lived. It was only after going to college in Chicago that I became a snob, and suburban Houston was ruined for me. I sometimes wonder if I would have loved a place like the Astrodome as fervently as I always have if I had not seen it until my critical faculties were developed. No doubt I would have found it overblown, and the firework show on the scoreboard crass and cheesy. Witness also how people from "sophisticated" cities like Chicago and Boston whine on and on about their architecture and neighborhood planning, while folks in Houston are happily oblivious to it. In a way, we as a city are still, for better or worse, in our childhood on this issue.

Speaking of how easy it is to make a kid happy:

When I was about four, my father took the family to a soda fountain for ice cream. When it was time for me to place my order, I said I wanted a milkshake.

"What flavor?"

"Raspberry."

"We have chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. No raspberry."

"But I want raspberry!", I insisted.

"We don't have that."

I guess my father saw my disappointment. "Bring him a raspberry milkshake," he said.

The soda jerk rolled his eyes. "Sir, we don't have..."

"Sure you do," my dad interjected. "See?", pointing at the menu. "S-T-R-A-W-B-E-R-R-Y. Raspberry."

Best raspberry shake I ever had.

I agree. The challenge is how to keep our minds open like children while still possessing knowledge. Sometimes knowledge helps us to appreciate things more, whereas as children we would've dismissed them. There's a buddhist saying, "when the opposites arise, the Buddha mind is lost" which makes sense if you've ever had a taste of that calm state where the mind isn't being critical.

Back to the topic. There's a place on Wayside about a half block north of Harrisburg where there is an old, very Art Deco looking burger place. White Castle? Prince's? Anyone know? I'll take a pic sometime soon.

There used to be a place I liked called "Charlie's Hamburger Joint" in front of Randall's on Bissonett & Fondren. It looked like an old house, but was built new to look old. Last time I was in Houston, I think it was something else.

Also, anyone remember "Burger Mountain Soda Fountain"?

I used to live in the neighborhood across the street from that Randalls...about 7 years ago. When I was there, there was a taqueria in the parking lot. Strange thing about the taqueria...it was run by an Asian guy.

There used to be Charlie's all over the place. What was their slogan? "Over 2 dozen sold"?

I know there used to be one on Telephone Rd near Lockwood. There was one down in Clear Lake (Bay Area Blvd or Clear Lake City Blvd?). I also think there was one at Westheimer and 610...which has now become the classy "Zone D' Erotica" :(

I only ate at Charlie's once or twice...it didn't leave much of an impression on me, but I wasn't as smart as I am now. What's everyone else's opinion of Charlie's?

Mmmm....food threads....

Anywho, there was a Wyatts on W. 34th and Ella. My mom and uncle both worked there for a while.

Piccadilly Cafeteria was in Northwest Mall for a while but closed shop about 5 years ago I think. The one in Northline Mall survived for a little while after but has now gone.

As it stands there are only 2 Pancho Mexican Buffets left in Houston (one on 45 north and one at Jones and 1960).

My grandma worked at the Princes on 14th (?) and Shepard. I think one of the old staff pics of her hangs in either the I-10 or 59 Princes. She is wearing this really neat-o space suit thing. And was making 35 cents an hour :)

I want to say there was a Ruby Tuesday in Northwest Mall too, right across from the old Picadilly Cafeteria. Then again, I think I was 4 when the restaurant in question closed down.

And yeah, Champs rocked. The one that was on 290 and Bingle is now a Bravos Mexican Restaurant. And there isn't a train, but you can still see the tracks and tunnels.

Anyone remember Dirtys? There was one on Durham where Cyclone Anyas is now located and there was one on Chimney Rock too. From what I recall, it was pretty good and I could draw on the walls without my mom getting all poofy.

There was a Woolworths Grill thing in Northwest Mall too, my uncle worked there for a while too.

Lets see, there is a Charlies Hamburgers on W. Gray in the River Oaks Plaza. moo. I've had better hamburgers.

I remember the day that Lukes burnt down. We were going down Westheimer and it was flooding something fierce and traffic was all kinds of backed up. And there is was, blazing away.

Hardee's was here very briefly, I want to say mid 70s. The Whataburger on Westheimer between Edloe and Weslayan was originally a Hardee's. I ate there once. I think most of the Hardee's were taken over by Whataburger, which wasn't that big back then.

I don't think Carl's Jr. was ever here.

Steak and Shake was here in the late 70s; the James Coney Island on Westheimer across from the Jungman Library was a Steak and Shake; they're back in TX in the DFW area; hope they'll get back down here, but Culver's, which now has a location out in the Woodlands, is actually better as far as chains go.

Houston had it's own sliders (mini-burgers) - My-T-Byte, on Sheperd between Alabama and Richmond, in a former Toddle House. Didn't last long, unfortunately.

Oh, and yes, I also remember this place called JoJo's, which was pretty good(This was near the Fondren area, I think, where i used to live).    I don't know if they are still open, though.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The JoJo's on S. Braeswood, 1 block w. of Hillcroft, has been vacant for about 15 years now and you can hardly see the building for the overgrown shrubbery. The JoJos on Wilcrest @ 59 became a Champs and is now an Exxon station.

I don't know what ever happened to the Champs - they always seemed to do a good business but the food wasn't anything special. I only ate at one a couple of times.

I think a lot of the JoJos went into former Sambo's locations.

Have I missed One's-A-Meal in this thread? They were dine-ins with counters and booths, specializing in breakfast and sandwich fare. They were mostly downtown and south to southwest of downtown in the 50's. Ones I remember were one next to the River Oaks theater, one in the Village, one at Richmond and Shepherd, and one near the old Delman theater. Any still around?

The Ones-A-Meal on Memorial, W. Gray and Greek Pizza on Memorial are all owned by the same family. I don't think any Ones-A-Meals with the diner menu still exist. Only the Greek menu restaurants are still open.

I remember Steak n Shake from the 70's. It's a priority for me to go to them whenever I'm in the Midwest. They're all over the place in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, and as someone posted, they've made it back to Texas in the DFW area. Braums is another North Texas staple (burgers, ice cream, some dairy and bakery products) that would be nice to have down here.

Now on to the serious early 80's reminiscing.

Another former Del Taco: Goode Company Hamburgers and Taqueria at Kirby and Westpark.

Hamburgers by Gourmet on Kirby and on Alabama near University of St. Thomas. The Kirby HBG was torn down and replaced with a strange adobe-mission looking little building for a restaurant called Padre Pollo. They had _roast_ chicken and semi-Mexican style side dishes and decor. Good and cheap, but it didn't last long. It later became Kirby Grill, which was a pretty decent Cafe Express kind of place, and now is a Castle Dental, I think.

Zeke's Hamburgers on Kirby where Beck's Prime is now.

Ruby Red's Steakburgers on Main at Greenbriar, with peanuts at the table for throwing shells on the floor.

Neal's Ice Cream (various locations). First place I ever tasted Mexican chocolate ice cream (with cinnamon)

Chicago Pizza Company on Mandell where Cafe Artiste is now. Pretty good thick crust pizza.

New York New York Pizza, Westpark at Gessner. It also had deep-dish pizza, and the restaurant featured an old NYC subway car inside.

Jenny's Hideaway on Alabama near the Menil parking lot. Probably the first and most successful conversion of that old house into a restaurant.

Harlow's Hollywood Cafe on Hillcroft. Late hours and chocolate cheesecake for dessert!

The Bowery downtown, more or less where the Alley parking garage/Birraporetti's is now.
Ditto on the late hours and chocolate cheesecake.

and of course, Jamail's Grocery on Kirby next to House of Pies. The original upscale grocery store in Houston.

Hamburgers by Gourmet, never ate there but I do remember it -- and it actually reminded me of another restaurant, Across the Street. I can't remember where it was located, but there were telephones on every table and you'd call your order into the kitchen. I remember going there around 1975ish.

I just (on my way back from lunch) saw a sign on the Edward's Theatre building (Weslayan at 59) that said they're going to open a restaurant called Harlow's! I do remember the Harlow's on Hillcroft (near Richmond I think) for its late night hours and old movie posters featuring (who else?) Jean Harlow.

Quite the popular late night hangout at one time. I also saw the sign for the new Harlows and was wondering what that was about.

As luck would have it, I was in the midwest last week and went to a Steak-and-Shake for the first time, for I had been informed that it was not to be missed. All I had was a shake, though. Not too bad!

You knew that One's-a-Meal was good diner food because it always had a lot of cops eating there. :)

Driving there made for a great family outing on a weekend afternoon. They had a huge dining room up on the second floor, and meals were served family style by waiters in white coats. They had a "winter dinner" and a "summer dinner"- main difference was crabs in the summer, oysters in the winter. I think the building's still there, wonder if one day it might be reopened?

:D Here's a ton that I remember from the 80's! Pipe Organ Pizza (they still have these in other states) - they had great video games and cool prizes!...Golden Chick - I think there was one where the Dolce Freddo/Ben & Jerry's is on Kirby near Rice Village...Tamale's was a cool restaurant located in Rice Village where Fu's Garden is now...Charlie's Hamburgers were allllll over the place - Rice Village on Times, Spring, Katy...Poor Man's Country Club was a cool sports bar that had barbecue on University in Rice Village where the bank next to El Meson is...The Bagel Manufactory was on Rice Blvd in the Village...El Pollo Loco had many locations including downtown and one on Kirby near Rice Village where the dental place is now...Destefano's Pizza was a very very 80's little league sports bar pizza restaurant (Moon Patrol & Ms. PacMan were all the rage) where Andre's Wigs is now in Weslayan Shopping Center (near the Randall's) off Weslayan and Bissonnet...there was a Wienerschnitzel where the Wendy's on Westheimer in the Montrose is now. I still believe that Two Pesos was such a better restaurant than Taco Cabana! Their chicken fajita tacos were something West U families frequently went out to eat!....what else....Eddie's Pizza was in a little shack in the parking lot of Windsor Plaza on Richmond (across from where Best Buy is now)....the old house on University near Rice that has housed Mr. Gatti's for awhile now started out as something called "Z's Pizza"...Bertha's was absolutely the best Mexican food in town - she had one downtown in an old stand alone building...then she moved it into a skyscraper....finally she moved it to the far right corner of that shopping strip on Montrose (next to and across the street from where Diedrick's coffee is now...The Cultured Cow was a great "frozen yogurt" place that also had great baked potatos - there was one in Rice Village across the street from where Ruggles is now and one in Galleria II where Dylan's Candy Store is now...Big Frank's was a great "Chicago Style" hot dog restaurant on the corner of Sunset and Kirby (it's a bank now)....I really really miss these places: The Antone's in Sharpstown Mall was huge and had barrel tables with barrel chairs out on a patio...the Antone's on Main (where Taco Cabana) is now was a neat location....The Orange Julius in the Sharpstown Mall food court was somewhere we visited each time we went to the mall - back then it seemed like more people went to Sharpstown more often than the Galleria!....The Village Cafe was a short lived restaurant right on Kirby in the Village - there's a bike shop there now and on the front you can still see where the patio was!....on south Main near the Dome there was a huge Gabby's barbecue place that was very very popular...on Montrose just north of where 59 crossed over there was a shaved ice drive thru called Snow Biz that was open until late and had probably 50 or so flavors! - I think the building became a Bambolino's, which I think was recently moved to Westheimer near Hugo's.....Anyone remember Albritton's Cafeteria? there was one on Bellaire in that shopping center that contains Antone's and Eckerds. There was a Ruby Tuesday on Holcombe in the Barnes & Noble, Randall's shopping center - it is a Chik-Fil-A now. All these memories...and great eateries! Such a shame they're all gone!

You remember some good ones, belmontdrew. I didn't remember the Antone's in Sharpstown Center. The Tamales was in an old Meyer Bros. store in the Village, I think (or the Meyer Bros. might have been the store next door). I remember Yamin's and Stefano's pizza places; they had been one chain at one time, but went their separate ways and now both are gone. The Ming's on Montrose just north of Westheimer was a Big Frank's.

Go to this page:

http://users.ev1.net...hpat/index.html

click on Topics, go to Restaurants and Diners, page 3, scroll down to the series of pics labeled 23469, #s 1 thru 13 -- it's an Albritton's, I think the one on Waugh, which was the only one I ever went to.

Lot's of great pics of old restaurants on that site, many of which I've never heard of.

OK, how about a place called Chestnuts on Chestnut near Bissonet in Bellaire? I could be making this up but I remember going to this place on a date maybe in about 1980.

Does anybody remember the name of the hamburger restaurant in the old Meyerland Plaza, on the s. side of the center, not facing Beechnut or the Loop, that had the gasoline station theme -- lots of pumps and signs and the like.  Was it just the Oil Co. or something like that?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think that was called the Houston Oil Company.

That also reminds me of the Filling Station (I think it was called that) on Richmond maybe near Fountainview. They had an old-time red gas pump in front.

Also, does anyone remember Dean Goss Dinner Theatre? Dean Goss was a pretty big presence in Houston in the 70s.

Where was his place? On South Main? I remember the one in T&C - Windmill Dinner Theatre, I think.

I met Dean Goss once (maybe more). He was talking about a game show concept he had that he was trying to sell to 13 and said some interest had also been expressed by one of the networks. I don't think anything ever came of it.

I drove down West Gray the other day, very, very slowly, much to the amusement of fellow motorists, looking around a lot. That street has undergone major changes in the 35 years I've been in Houston. I remembered Captain John's, a restaurant on the SW corner of W. Gray and McDuffie. The front of the building was angled to a point, like the bow of a ship; there was a tall slender neon-lighted spire, like the mast of a ship. Didn't look as much like a boat as the Capt. Bennys, tho. It was set up kind of high off the ground as I remember. They served steaks, seafood - wasn't just a seafood restaurant. I only went once or twice but it must've been pretty popular with the River Oaks crowd.

The Mrs. Baird's bakery was a little east, probably at W. Gray and Woodhead, on the SE corner. Further east on the north side of the street was the Sanitary Farm Dairies; up on Waugh was the Carnation plant.

I don't know if it was always there but in 1979 it was on Westridge Rd (that's one of the streets that spikes out from the Astrodome).

And yes, I do remember the Windmill Dinner Theatre in Town & Country!

Godfathers Pizza on 1960

Nighthawk Steak house (there is only one left, the Frisco in Austin)
Oscars Creamery (I think they just moved, but it aint the same if you know what I mean)

I don't know what ever happened to the Champs - they always seemed to do a good business but the food wasn't anything special.  I only ate at one a couple of times.

I think a lot of the JoJos went into former Sambo's locations.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Has JoJos on S Braeswood been closed that long? I had a job driving a tow truck back in 2000 I was out there late one night and began feeling nostalgic and remembering the times I walked through there as I was on my way to my girlfriends house. Anyway, I came upon JoJo's and noticed it dark. I parked across the street from it and walked up to the door. There was a notice for the customers on the door thanking them for their business and basically saying they were closed. To the right was a window and I could see in and noticed that all of the tables were set, silverware and napkins placed, salt, pepper ketchup bottles at the center of the tables as if they had been set for the next day. It didn't look like it had been closed long... almost as if they had just closed the night before. Even the grass looked like it had been cut recently. That was the last time I was out there. Anyone know if it's still like that inside or has it been boarded up since?

Del Taco?
White Castle?

I remember a chain of Chicken Restaurants from the South came in to Houston and left a few months later. It was called BoJangles, I never ate there but on there home page they show a map of the US and there is still a dot there for Houston. Did any of you ever eat there?

It closed after the area was re-developed in the early 90s. I also vaguely remember a restaurant called the Rumble Seat that was located in the old Meyerland Plaza mall.

If you really need to see an old Steak and Egg building, there is one on Memorial just past Dairy Ashford heading west, on the left ,next to the flying pizza place. I believe there also one still standing on Beechnut or Bellaire just past Wilcrest on the right as you head west. :D

I can't stand to eat messy food. That's why I don't like going to Taco Bell. You eat a burrito, and those refried beans sometimes squish out and spill into your lap.

I ate at both Jimmie Walkers and the San Jacinto Inn back in the mid-80's when I was a kid. I remember getting good seafood at both. I ate my first raw oyster at the San Jacinto Inn. I remember getting Neal's Ice (don't know correct spelling but as kids my brother, sister and I referred lovingly to it as "neelzice") at the little carts in the Astrodome during games in the early 80's. It came in little paper (Dixie) cups. I think the flavors were lemon/lime, raspberry, and orange? I remember going to the actual store too but have no idea where it was located. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

Cellar Door (now Goode Co)
Velvet Turtle (my favorite - saw it mentioned, but thought of it again)
Farrell's
Shoney's
Don's Seafood
Alfred's (mentioned but LOVED)
Hillmans (Kemah)
Hill's Seafood (Galveston)

And a question - started University of Houston in 1973. There was a burger place across the street from the main campus that you would place your order by phone and they brought it to you. The little character looked a lot like the guy on the Pringle's can.

And a second question - does anyone but me remember the bowling alley and other things on the third floor of the original Galleria? Does that club on the top floor of the oldest hotel still exist? They made Hurricanes that would knock out a prize fighter!

Does anyone remember "Across the Street" hamburger place? You sat down at a table and ordered your food from your table with a telephone thing. Then when your order was ready, it would blink. You would then go pick up your food at the counter. Don't really remember what street it was off of but we walked across a patch of ground by Baptist U off of Beachnut St.

I forgot about Los Tios. We ate there a lot. Think it was off of Bissonett. Also, remember Gemco? One of the first places that you had to have a membership to shop there.

maybe off OST and Greenbriar. not exactly sure.

I remember going there with my parents in the early 70's
had a name like the Cellar or similar. It could have been the Cellar Door (see above) but i am not sure about the Goode company location.
I think it had those one-way tire spikes in the parking lot, where you can't go out the in driveway etc.
That might be why it stood out to me as a kid.

Marini's Empanada House early-mid 70's - on Westheimer near 'the curve' just before the Tower Theater - my introduction to empanadas, they had meat, vegetable, and dessert versions that were wonderful (seems like they had a location way out Westheimer much later on)

Udder Delight early-mid 70's - ice cream place next to Marini's, my lil sis knew the guys. Still remember the day we got the call to come try out their new Avocado ice cream (it sucked large, they had to put too much lime juice in to keep it from turning brown)

La Bodega Bar / Harvst Moon Cafe early-mid 70's - @ Fairview & ??? - La Bodega was downstairs, wine bar, had stunning wood walls done by Yost & Company. Harvest Moon was upstairs, great veggie place

Sonny Look's Steakhouse on S Main?? - with the honey- and garlic-flavored butters, maybe more. You couldn't have a junior high or high school athletic banquet in that part of town without having it at Look's back then!

Zappos Sandwiches on Beechnut across from Meyerland Plaza - a Schlotzky's knock-off, but I thought their buns were better!

Furr's - gone. The last one in H-town was on I-45 past Aldine High on the right as you head north. The AYCE buffet was good eats for the money, but I'd never get a second helping anyway. Furr's still has one open location in Corpus Christi and several (AFAIK) in the DFW area too.

There used to be a chain of places called Sweden House when I was little, that offered "smorgasbord" style dining - basically cafeteria-style service specializing in (gag) Swedish food. They were kind of a flash-in-the-pan concept in WI and IL, of course cafeteria-style dining didn't seem too popular up north anyway. By the mid-70s they faded out completely.

Steak houses like Ponderosa did okay up north (I have an uncle who managed them for many years). Ponderosa's were like the Bonanza chain down here, like Golden Corral is today.

Who remembers York Steak House? I worked at one briefly in Gunspoint when I was in high school, steaks were okay but it sucked to work there. They closed about a year or so after I quit.

Houlihan's in Gunspoint was a cool place, I miss it. Across from Houlihan's was a place called Dalt's, which was a TGIFriday's copied concept actually started up by a couple of TGIFriday's managers who worked at the Gunspoint store. Had they chosen a location in another part of Houston it might have survived longer than it did.

El Chico's in H-town - gone. The Huntsville location is still open, but they've pulled out of Houston entirely. I worked at the Gunspoint location before the chain pulled out. The Cuellar family who founded it bought it back from a company called Campbell-Taggart who originally bought it from them. C-T produced a line of frozen enchilada dinners with the same EC name, and eventually began pushing the same exact thing in the restaurants. When people found out they were paying $6 at the restaurant for the same enchilada dinner they could have bought at the grocery store for $1.98, they lost money big time. C-T couldn't recover, the Cuellar's bought back the restaurant chain for half as much as they sold it to C-T and tried to rescue it. They would have succeeded, had it not been for getting sued by the family of a deceased victim of an underage drunk driver, who left the Northwest mall location intoxicated.

Picadilly Cafeterias are becoming rare. There's one still open on West Bellfort between South Gessner and Fondren, and I won't be back. Went to the Picadilly at Northline in the mid-90s, one of the better-run locations I'd ever been to, the one in Gunspoint was always good and I used to be a regular there. Don't know if it's open any longer.

The only Alfie's Fish & Chips still in existence near Houston is in Texas City, that I found in a Yahoo search. The last one I had been to was on Crosstimbers across from Northline in the late '80s, which I'm certain has long since been closed.

Before you die you have to go up to Dallas and eat a real hamberger at Keller's Drive-in. This is a hands down real live burger joint. Now days every fast-food joint has a drive-through window. But Keller's still likes to keep things old-fashioned. Park your car, click on your blinkers and wait for a friendly carhop. Place your order, roll up your window a tad and wait for that tray to arrive. Five bucks and change gets you a double-meat cheeseburger, Tater Tots with melted cheese and a drink (and you'll tip the server if ya got any class). The burgers are first-rate and I mean first-rate, but the real charm here is obvious: You get to sit in your car and chow down without worrying about a mishap on the open road. The serve ice cold cold beer, and even have frosted mugs. We go up to Dallas, hit Keller's then on the way back hit the Galaxy drive-in in Ennis and checkout a movie. Keller's has street rod night's and that's when I really get to play. I take my '59 vette or 67 rs/ss up for that, life doesn't get any better than that. Back before there was a Sonic, there was Keller's. I use to hang out in Dallas when I was younger, and Keller was there in the 60's. I think they opened in '54 or '55. Keller's and the "Pig Stand" was the place to be on a Friday night cruise. I think Pig Stand was around in the 1920's. The Drive-In I think was the first in the nation or so they use to boast, There use to be a Pig Stand down on Washington Ave in Houston, but it was a sit down joint. I think it's still there, I know they have a couple still in the Alamo City.

But you really have to hit Keller's, hands down best burger ever. This is a fun place to go, eat and watch the "car show". If you like classic hot rods and good burgers try Kellers. You can't beat what you get for the price. A burger, fries or tots and drink for way under 6.00. They have a good variety on the menu.
Good service, even when they are really busy. You can also have a beer with your burger. Saturday nights best time to go and catch the action. They have been in business for over 50 years! Check it out!

That was Brittain's Broiler Burger - one of my all-time favorite places to eat. Beck's does a pretty good copy of the old "number 2 with cheese" with their Bubba Burger minus the lettuce and tomatoes and add onions.

If you've never tried it, Beck's has a couple of very nice locations - one on Westheimer between Chimney
Rock and Fountainview (they saved a BEAUTIFUL old oak tree and put seating below) and the other is next to the "pro shop" at Memorial Park golfcourse - north of Memorial Drive. You can sit outside and look out over the fairway or putting area - like "being at the country club".

There may be a Broiler Burger preserved on Bellaire (near where it splits with Bisonett) but I was not impressed with their food. Didn't come close to the Brittain's Broiler Burger I remember so fondly.

Magic Pan, Galleria ( there's a website, magic pan.com, I think, for all of us fans)
Brittain's Broiler Burger
Nanny's (owned by Blue Ribbon Packing Company) on Calhoun behind U of H - great cream gravy!
ORIGINAL Ninfa's (Carlos, the waiter, works for her sons now at their place)
Leo's Mexican Restaurant on Shepherd
Armando's (good substitute is Bocados Restaurant on W. Alabama near St. Thomas)
Bombay Palace (staff and cooks have gone to Gourmet India, 13155 Westheimer, past Dairy-Ashford)
Allbritton's Cafeteria
Taco Bueno - the closest one is in Waco, I think
steak sandwich place that was in Carillon Center on Westheimer
Roy Roger's Roast Beef Sandwiches - loved the sweet BBQ sauce mixed with the horseradish sauce - yum
a bakery/deli called Maxim's (?) that was in strip center on San Felipe near Fountainview
Sakowitz on Post Oak's sandwich shop (when it was upstairs and good)
Marshall-Fields - Galleria - chicken salad sandwiches
Lotus Chinese Restaurant - Westheimer/Fountainview - Beef and Scallops
Oak'n Bucket
strudel shop in the Galleria - tiny (1 booth) but good - cream cheese strudel and almond/apricot
Ruby Red's Hamburger

As may have been mentioned before, there was a Brittain's Broiler Burger in Merchant's Park at Shepherd and W 11th. It was one of the original establishments in the shopping center in addition to Grant's, Wyatt's, Harris Men's Wear, Walgreen's, Billings Jewlery, Henke and Pilot and others. Brittan's, Harris and Walgreen's eventually became part of Merchant's Park Bank.

How about Gallaghers Old Irish Steak House? I believe it was a chain similar to Steak & Ale with at least two locations - one on 45N around Tidwell and one on 59S.

The 76 Truckstop at Rankin Rd had pretty good CFS ( at least it seemed so at 2am and 3 sheets to the wind) and was open 24hrs. I think it was gone by the mid-80's after being overrun with drug dealers and ladies of the night.

Dinner Bell Cafetiria: My Great Aunt lived on Pearson off Broadmoore and this was where she bought all her cakes, our favorite was German Chocolate.

Hickory Stick Bar-b-que run by Charlie West and we ate there all the time. The Mother of a good friend from my childhood worked there. Now it's Lowes parking lot.

There was an Italian restaraunt tucked in the woods right across the street from the Hickory Stick and its long since gone, so are the woods.

Franks Grill on Telephone: Still open and going strong right next door to the liquor store that has been there just about as long as Franks.

The Tel Wink Grill: Still open as of the last time I drove by although they are not open 24 hrs like they once were.

Sheffields Ice House/ Beer Joint. Still there at the bend in Telephone Road. THis was my Fathers hang out for over 30 years.

Turks Bar-b-que. Another of my Fathers hang outs for shooting pool. On Long Drive just west of Telephone Road.

The corner of Bellfort and Telephone was one of my favorite places because there was a Duncan Donuts right next to a Der Weinerschnitzel. Both are gone and a used car lot sits there now.

This is a great thread....bringing back a lot of memories.

I was wondering if someone could shed some light on this...

A couple of my friends and I were discussing the old Night Hawk restaurants - there were several in Austin that have closed in the past decade or so.

One friend, though, claims that there was once one in Houston. He thinks it may have been located on the corner of Fondren and Westheimer, where there is now a bank of some sort.

Does this ring a bell?

Yes there was a Nighthawk here and it was on Westheimer around that intersection or further out near Gessner; I'm not sure of the exact location. It was only briefly in the 70s. I think it became one of the original Atchafalaya River Cafes when the blackened seafood craze hit. There was also a Nighthawk in SA.

The only thing left of Harry Akins' old Nighthawk restaurants is the Frisco Shop on Burnet Rd. in Austin which is like a time warp and the frozen entrees at the grocery store.

OK, here's one I'm not sure if anyone will remember. The old Westwood Mall on 59 near Bissonnet...before it was remodeled into the neon thing it was before it became an office park. There used to be this convoluted series of steps in the main entrance and at the bottom was this place called "Olga's" something or other...they served these sandwiches that were sort of pita wraps, before their time. They were really really good. Used to eat there with my Mom everytime we went to that mall.

Anyone remember?

Two veteran Houston restaurant groups plan to open 10 franchised steakhouse locations over the next several years.

The new restaurants will follow the chain's new prototype and revamped menu. While Sizzler continues to use a pay-first system, the restaurant's new design eliminates the single ordering line local diners might remember.

Blue Parrott--When I was very young, we would go there for Sunday brunch after church. I think it around the S. MacGregor area probably where 288 now runs.

Hebert's Ritz--In what is now Midtown. I want to say off of McGowan, but may have been closer to downtown.

Cortes Deli--Started out on Alabama in a strip center off of Revere. Opened a second location in the "jinxed" location further east on Alabama across from the Menil parking lot (Jenny's Hideaway, Michaeline's, etc.). Then moved to corner of Feagan and Shepherd closing about 5 years ago. I would kill to be able to eat their migas again.

Shakey's--I've seen a lot of references to pizza places, but don't think I've seen this one mentioned.

Maxim's--both the old downtown location at Milam and Lamar and the newer one at Timmons/Richmond (where Tony's now holds forth). Well, at least you can now get the spread at Spec's.

The Anchorage--best seafood restaurant in town in the 1970s. Located adjacent to what was the Hilton on 610 at TC Jester. Simply spectacular fried shrimp and fresh seafood flown in from all over the country.

Rainbo Bakery at Astroworld--Mini loaves. Enough said.

Western Kitchen--BBQ at the corner of Greenbriar and Richmond where Mykonos now operates.

Glatzmeier's--both downtown and the location on Montrose between Chelsea and Banks.

Burgerville#2--Times and Kelvin. Had totally forgotten about that one until I was almost through with this list.

And would second the mentions of Kaphan's and Sonny Look's.

I'm glad somebody else remembers Western Kitchen! After my dad got back from his one after-work beer with his cronies at the Alabama Ice House on Friday evenings (real wild man he was), we'd either go to Western Kitchen or pick up Someburgers from the little stand on S. Shepherd. WK also had a chicken and dumplings bar that was only open after 5 PM.

Another neighborhood pick-up favorite in the 70's was Herfy's hamburgers, located where the Whataburger in S. Shepherd is now. First time I ever had horseradish, and it hooked me for life. Also Alfie's Fish & Chips in the row of shops on Richmond near Mandell.

I had many a lunch at Beef-N-Bun as well in the 80's. A friend of mine had an exotic car restoration shop called Contemporary Classics off of W. Fuqua - fun place to hang out on a Saturday. ^_^

Hebert's Ritz--In what is now Midtown. I want to say off of McGowan, but may have been closer to downtown.

Maxim's--both the old downtown location at Milam and Lamar and the newer one at Timmons/Richmond (where Tony's now holds forth). Well, at least you can now get the spread at Spec's.

Wasn't that Parrot Green? :) There are pictures posted around here of it.

Here is Heberts Ritz.

Maxim's moved to that location in 1959. It descended from the Peacock Restaurant that was on Fannin at Capitol.

I bet no one else remembers this: There was a restaurant on the corner of W.

I worked at the Allbrittons on Bellaire Blvd. as a teenager for a whopping $1.07 a hour! Yes, every customer was greeted with "May I serve you"?

What I loved best was their chocolate pie and twice-baked potatoes - yummy!

I had forgotten all about Price's Hamburgers. Great little burgers, loved the secret sauce. The one I'm thinking about was on Bellaire Blvd. and eventually Jack in the Box moved in there.

Are all the Cellar Door restaurants gone now? They had the BEST bbq ever.

At that particular Price's on Bellaire, there was a painted "Humpdie-Dumpdie" on the fence with a speaker box behind it. You pushed a button on his nose and he talked to you. It was of couse the clerk inside, and somehow we all knew that but it didn't matter to a four year old kid, by gollie you were talking to "Humpdie-Dumpdie" for Christ's sakes.

Marini's Empanada House early-mid 70's - on Westheimer near 'the curve' just before the Tower Theater - my introduction to empanadas, they had meat, vegetable, and dessert versions that were wonderful (seems like they had a location way out Westheimer much later on)

These were the best empanadas I've ever had. The menu was huge. I think there were over 100 different kinds of empanadas. The original joint was tiny, with bull fighting posters on the walls and tables and chairs made from old barrels. I remember a few other locations later on, including one in Good Time Charlies at Sharpstown Mall. There was a location on Hillcroft that changed its name to Marines in the 90s when Marini opened up a new place on Westheimer. None of them are as good as the original, when grandma was making them in the back.

This place was incredible. They had a huge White Mountain ice cream freezer in the store, just like the one we had when I was a kid, except much larger. The ice cream they made tasted exactly like home made ice cream, because it was. There was a location on Guadalupe in Austin during the mid 80s.

It makes me sad to think of how great these places were.

Another place I miss was Phil's (where 59 Diner on Shepherd is now). I remember going there in the late 70s or early 80s and it wasn't a retro 50s restaurant, it was like someone had preserved a 50s restaurant, including the waitresses. Best chicken fried steak I ever had.

Oddly enough, Marini's has just opened a location in the Carillion Center in the back. You can't see it from Westheimer.

It's called The Original Marini's Empanada House. I walked by the yesterday and was wondering what they meant by "original" - as in, had there been another? I'd never heard of the place.

Now I know.

And if you want to go, it's at Westheimer near Beltway 8 in the Carillion Center behind the Chili's.

Thank you! I've been trying for a very long time to think of Udder Delight's name and here it is. Scrumptious ice cream, but never had anything as 'exotic' as avocado - yikes :)

KELLER'S DRIVE IN
6537 E. Northwest Highway
Dallas, TX 75228
214-368-1209

or

10554 HARRY HINES BLVD
DALLAS, TX 75220
Phone: 214-357-3572

I highly recommend the #5 Double meat Double Cheese Lg fry and a Ice Cold Bud.........Life is really good then.

It's been years since I've had a Keller burger, but have to agree with you. The BEST burgers and the COLDEST beer around!

True to my word, I went to the new Original Marini's on Westheimer today. The empanadas are good -- not as good as the ones I remember from the original original, but better than any I've had since. The place is nice and seemed to draw a decent number of people. Hopefully this one will last longer than the 90s incarnation. The serve yerba mate if you're into exotic xanthine mixtures.

The menu is almost identical to that 90s version, with one spectacular addition: chocolate empanadas. The menu says it's filled with "Warm Ghirrardelli chocolate", but it seems like it may be cut with something. Straight chocolate would have been more overpowering, I think. This was smooth, creamy and almost light. Whatever it is, it provided one of the greatest experiences of my life. I'll be back for more.

Then only slightly odd part was a single raisin swimming in the warm chocolate. My lunch mate said that would have greatly disturbed him, but it takes a lot more than a raisin (gosh, I hope it was a raisin) to scare me off of a steaming pocket of warm, chocolatey goodness.

Yes! I loved Zider Zee. It later became the First Wendy's in Houston.
I lived in Sharpstown so I remember BURGER row, in this order:
Herfy's
Burger King
McDonalds
Wendys
Jack in the Box

Then there was also the Ground Patti. It was a block off fondren facing the Sharpstown Mall. I remember they had a really kewl sound set up with dual reel to reels behind glass.

And we had a Shakey's over on Hillcroft which later became Anotonio's Flying Pizza. There was a Shakey's in Stafford, TX that became Golden Bridge Restaurant.

The original Los Tios is gone. It was over on Bissonnet and Fondren.
They are no longer owned by the Garbett's. I grew up with Michael Garbett.

I remember there was a good Mexican restaurant over near the old chili's on Bissonnet across the street from the old TGI Friday's.
But I cant remember the name.

Also, does anyone remember New York New York Pizza over on Gessner and Westpark?
Anyone remember how Westpark was rerouted there?

And lets see, what else... man I could go on all day...

There was a Mr Gatti's on Bellaire and Corporate, down close to the Del Taco, near the Lewis and Coker grocery store next to the Cafeteria, but I dont think it was a Wyatt's. OH! It was a Furr's Cafeteria, HAH!

Okay, lemme keep going... Remember a Tony Roma's on Richmond? Remember Circus Circus on Richmond? THey had great burgers. AH, here is a GOOD one... the NIGHT HAWK on Westheimer, down near Fondren. All the truckers used to go there.

House of Pancakes on the corner of Bellaire and Fondren behind the old Safeway.

Wan Fu chinese restaurant NEXT TO the old Safeway (and the old Demeris BBQ).

Does anyone remember that big cafetieria type restaurant NEXT TO Farrel's in the Galleria? I think it was called the Cooquery or the Cookery.

YES I remember the old A&W by the way, and the Princess on Hillcroft. But do you remember the original Long John Silver's on Hillcroft? THey used to give kids the pirate hats and chocolate dubloon candies.

Remember the Monterrey House on Fondren near Richmond? It is a Fajita Flats now.

Remember when the Shartpstown Mall was 1 story and there were nice restaurants in it and that huge glockenspiel?
Remember when Westwood Mall had a theater in it?
Remember when Memorial City was an OUTSIDE mall like Meyerland?
Remember when your mom took you to the original Sears downtown and you got a free cookie at the deli counter?

Then there are a couple places in the Heights my parents used to take me, but I was too young to read or remember the names of them. I just remember that back then, restaurants didnt have booster chairs so they just used to ask how many phone books I needed to sit on.

Now I have regressed back to about 4 years old... Thanks a lot guys!!!

Yes there was one there, then it reopened way in the back right side of the store on the east side of FOndren and 59. In other cities, they had the same concept but they were called Around the Corner, or Next Door. I used to order the Hickory Burger.

Speaking of that, remember when you could actually get Frito Pie served in a bag of Frito's at Chilis? Back when CHili's actually servied Chili, and the menu was 1 page? The original on Richmond is LONG GONE.

Cooter's was very popular and big. If memory serves well (or not) it was 2 stories high with a big elevated dance floor and several wide video screens so you could see latest MTV vids as you danced. Cant recall where it was but I know for sure there was a simlar new club on Westpark and Fondren? In fact one night Pee Wee Herman (literally unknown then) appeared/did in his act (clothed) Cant recall name of that club but its now a Mex Furniture dive. I think the club you mentioned above was called The Filling Station?

These NeW WAVE or alternative dance clubs kept popping up everywhere it seemed probably as a result of the trendy MTV/punk/new wave scene and popularity of films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Valley Girl, Repo Man and groups like The Go-Go's, etc.

The Ocean Club was briefly discussed in another topic. Was on St. James street.

At the time I thought it was for a more upscale/stuffy crowd but it loosened up to live shows like "Dead or Alive". Now that was shocking! I really miss the new wave scene. Fun carefree days (no more purple mohawks) darn. Totally awesome, I am so sure!

Vertigo58

Confetti's was the other dance club that just came to mind!

Very state of the art sound system and video screens. Used to advertise "drink and drown nights" and "Beach party Blow-out" bashes. Bet M.A.D. would love to see that now. Thats probably why that type of advertising was canned. Law suits, accidents, etc.

Here were more often seen advertisments and radio slogan's to promote partying at clubs like Yucatan Liquor Stand, etc.

"All you can drink"
"Wet T-Shirt Night"
"Mud Wrestling Night"
"Tequila shots Night" (scary)

Yucatan had a large old school bus that would pick up lucky  winners and go riding around Houston while they served drinks on board and broadcast over the radio of the bus's progress to the club. Once you got there (club) with all the onlookers watching everyone popped out of the bus and into the beach area. (A pretend sand field area with volleyball net etc.) Girls in bikini's, etc. Many times Hawaiian Tropic girls were on hand and I still recall that stupid Spuds Mckenzie Glow in the dark dog on the bar counter.

All of this insanity took place on the new "Richmond Strip". Good Lord how did we live to tell about this mad era?

At least I can say we did it! Yippee!

The Yucatan was entirely too skanky for me. :P Although I did see a great, free Smithereens show in the parking lot.

After the 2- and 3-fers were outlawed, I spent the first half of the 90s on a barstool at the Richmond Arms. Loved those expat boys. I miss those days. Talk about crazy sports--they used to open at the crack of dawn for satellite feeds of FA cup games. Nothing quite like a bar packed to the rafters at 9 on a Saturday morning. And they weren't drinking coffee, either.... Sociologists and Starbucks call it 'the third place;' I just call it a great local bar where you know everyone.

Your right Crunch, Yucatan was "Girl's Gone Wild" way before the stupid show.

Sam's Boat was where most flocked to afterwards. That place never made any sense, all everyone did was guzzle beer and gawk at everyone walking up that plank. It was too preppy, way too preppy. Most of the guys thought they were in a "Porky's" film.

Now I'm thinking of those stupid "Weekend at Bernies" films.

Did anyone mention San Jacinto Inn at the Battlegrounds? Loved going there as a kid, even though I wasn't much of a seafood eater then.

Now I've eaten at the Monument Inn...I take it this is not the same place?

After browsing this topic, I can tell you that both the Kettle & Godfathers Pizza exist up by Bush Airport. Also, someone asked if Tookie's is still around. Yes they are! Sambo's used to be nationwide, but morphed into what is now Denny's. And yes, as has been mentioned, Mr. Gatti's has an open location in Clear Lake.

I grew up near Hillcroft and Main Street.....

I remember an ice cream place on Hillcroft before you got to Braeswood on the corner in the same parking lot Rice used to be in...before that right past St. Thomas More Church, there was a place called Jacks Yogurt Stop that was the first place I ever tried Frozen Yogurt that was right before the Frozen Yogurt craze of the 90s...

at Hillcroft and 90....Pizza Inn used to be pretty successful and it was next to Burger King, Ron's Chicken and a Frenchy's that was just as good as the original....across the street was a BBQ stand in a red building that was pretty good too next to the diving school

What I want to know, off of Chimney Rock and Airport (current used car lot) /Hiram Clarke and West Fuqua are old buildings that resemble a chinese temple...I vaguely remember going in there as a kid but where they chinese restaurants?

some of the best sno-cones ever were off of West Fuqua and Hiram Clarke in a white stand

I grew up in the Bellaire area and Price's on Bellaire/Holcombe was the early 60s version of MacDonalds/Burger Chef/ Burger King before they hit it BIG. Someone mentioned Jack's Yogurt Shop; it was named for Jack Chaluh a student from Westbury High School whose parents ran the place-- it was next to Zinnate's Delicatessen on Hillcroft. Zappo's Sandwich shop in Meyerland was around, if I remember, before Schlotsky's hit the scene. There was a place that I have not seen mentioned in the HighLand Village area at the RR tracks and Westheimer called Granny Haber's Chez Orleans-pretty decent seafood. There was a pretty good One's a Meal in the Bellaire Triangle. We'd go there after serving mass as altar boys at Holy Ghost Church. Timmy Chan's in Greenway Plaza, the original Cleburne Cafeteria near the downtown Sears, Tony's original small restaurant on Sage near Westheimer, and many more that I've mentioned on another thread...Good eating and good memories

Ah .. one more, Del Taco. I remember there was one out on main street. I think Taco Bell killed them.

I agree. Their food was much better. It had to do with some sort of lawsuit when Taco Cabana moved to Houston. Looks like the courts decided.

That was Brittain's Broiler Burger. I grew up just a few blocks away, and it was a big deal to go there for dinner. Burgers were 35 cents back in the mid '60s. If I close my eyes, I can still smell the smoke from the broiler. I think the barber shop next door is still there judging from pictures. I left Houston in the early '80s, but it still feels like home. Thanks for resurrecting a great memory.

In the mid '80's, there was an empanada place on Richmond in a strip center around Sage and the loop. There was also, in what I believe to be in the same center, a great pizza place that I thought was Barry's, but husband says no, Barry's has always been further down (or up) on Richmond. The pizzas would sit atop a pedestal thingy at the table. It seems it had a single name to it like Barry's, Mike's, John's, etc. Neither of these places as well as the strip center exist as I found out recently. I went to Marines (sp.?) on Hillcroft and Richmond hoping for the same cream cheese and caramel empanada, but it wasn't.

Also, early '90's, somewhere close to downtown was an ice cream/smoothie shop called Hawaii Kai (sp?). Always ordered chocolate ice cream with cream cheese mixed in - Heaven!

Don't kow about the empanadas, but I remember the first Barry's being somewhere around Windsor Plaza, around where the Chili's was.

Barry's used to be at the southwest corner of the Windsor Plaza parking lot at Richmond and Sage. The first Chili's I remember in Houston was Richmond and Fountainview, diagonally across from where Barry's is now.
