  2. The Admiral Byng of HPD? Something about "to encourage the others"?
  3. Tilman Fertitta is making half hearted attempt to bring an NHL team here but won't happen unless the NHL decides to expand. I think he wants the city of Houston to give him money or tax breaks to make it happen.
  4. It was only because of the IH 45 Pierce Elevated, which is coming down. Chaad Whitmire might try to stop it, he hates making things nicer in Houston, but he has zero authority over TXDOT taking it down. Dude thinks he is able to get whatever he wants after being a minority wrench in the GQP ruled Texas Legislature for decades.

  8. Wait, I thought that the whole area of Midtown along/north of McGowen St was always part of the city's traditional CBD (i.e. present even before the 2019 expansions into much of Midtown, and EaDo). Traditional or expanded, CBD standard for Houston does not call for any minimum building line requirements to begin with. Therefore, I am confused about this recent news, regarding why a variance request/fight for such was needed to begin with? The map below shows what I mean: red = traditional CBD blue = 2019 expansions into EaDo green = 2019 expansion into Midtown

  10. Wow so many typos- sometimes my rants affect my typing-- apologies. but a few hours have calmed me a bit to understand that going to those silly council meetings might be my new best step forward- sigh😶
  11. Planning commission deferred this. Neighbor spoke for it if they build a fence next to the alley to prevent vehicles traveling in the alley. Commission deferred it pending TIRZ 5 response due to possible future 20th street rehabilitation.
  12. The Planning Commission approved the variance request for off street parking. A neighbor behind this project spoke in favor of it because she is worried about vagrants that have moved in to it several times and was worried about potential fires they often could cause. It's a historical building, a former mechanical shop. After business hours paid parking is available across the street at the law office.
  13. The Planning Commission approved the variance request. Multiple people spoke for it including Council Women Carolyn Evans Shabazz from District D. The one and only person speaking against it was a representative of the proposed project at 1500 Gray who has a vested interest in opposing it.
  14. With this demolition and Tilman's purchase of the office building next door, I'd be surprised if Tilman is not purchasing this property as well.
  15. Samsung's Texas investment to transform Taylor into chipmaking hub - Austin Business Journal (bizjournals.com) "The impact of the Samsung factory in Taylor, about 40 miles northeast of Austin, is well-documented: thousands of jobs, billions of dollars of capital investment and transformation of the small city of 17,000 people that once was the economic engine of Williamson County north of Austin. Taylor is primed to regain that title. The rewards got even bigger this week, when the federal government committed to provide $6.4 billion in grants to Samsung, widening the company's investment to $45 billion in Central Texas and making it one of the largest economic development projects in U.S. history. The result will be the establishment of one of the most advanced and complete semiconductor facilities in the world, with multiple fabrication lines, a research-and-development facility, a packaging facility and more."
  16. Austin real estate news: What's up with downtown? - Austin Business Journal (bizjournals.com) "Consider this statistic from real estate firm Aquila Commercial LLC: There are 10 already-built towers downtown with at least 100,000 square feet of direct vacant office space — and three of the biggest and newest office blocks are completely empty despite being ready for tenants for many months. On top of that, some huge new office towers are in the works and will be courting prospective tenants soon, and there's no shortage of less expensive office space outside of downtown."
  17. Austin real estate news: What's up with downtown? - Austin Business Journal (bizjournals.com) "The Trammell Crow-developed tower has almost 800,000 square feet of office space sitting dark on Google's dime. According to commercial real estate firm Avison Young, rental rates in Austin's Central Business District at year-end 2019 averaged $67.39 per square foot for trophy properties. Assuming Google signed a lease at that rate, the company could be on the hook for about $145,000 per day or $53.2 million per year. It's apparently a cost that can be stomached by a company that reported $74 billion in net income last year."
  18. Home Run Dugout adding another batting bay building - Houston Business Journal (bizjournals.com) "Since opening, business has been so good that founders Nick Hermandorfer and Tyler Bambrick are adding another 10 indoor “batting bays” in a new 9,242-square-foot building on the north side of the property. Construction on the $3 million expansion started in early April with a goal to open this summer, Home Run Dugout said."
  19. I had the opportunity to visit with Mr. Cannady last Saturday at our gallery. He had come by to see Paul Hesters Fotofest exhibit. Paul was one of William's students many years ago, and has been photographing architectural projects in and around the state of Texas for many years. He contributed to Cite magazine and Texas Architect. He also has been one of the Menil's main photographers of artwork for ever. He taught at Rice for 18 years. We talked about the new building bearing his name, and he was very pleased with how the building was sited. He said he was looking forward to being there and being able to walk down the mall to his good friends (Brockstein), coffee shop. He also told me that one time he was sitting on the curb weeding his flower beds at his home on the corner of Bissonnet and Montrose and a guy walked by and exclaimed, Wow, who do you think lives here, And Bill said "I do", to which the guy replied," yeah, sure.!" He thought that very funny. He 's looking forward to the opening of Canady Hall. I invited him to join us on HAIF. He said he would check it out. If you're interested the exhibit featuring Paul Hesters fifty years of photography, and Sarah Sudhoff's work will be up until May 18th. Andrew Durham Gallery, 1821 West Alabama. Come by we're open from 11-6 Wed. thru Sat. Love to see some HAIFER's come by.
  20. Needville zip code & Needville ISD schools, but between the Needville, Pleak & Fairchilds ETJs. Lennar, Rausch Coleman Homes to develop Esperanza community - Houston Business Journal (bizjournals.com) "Rausch Coleman has started developing the first of about 440 homesites, and Hall expects Lennar to get started on its 1,260 lots in the next two to three months. “Including Rausch and Lennar, there will probably be close to 500 lots developed within this calendar year,” Hall said. “And then that would occur probably … every other year over the next three to five years, depending on the market (and) the velocity of the sales.”"

  22. I drove by it Saturday going to the Art Car Parade, first time I'd been by it since maybe last year's parade? Wow, what a magnificent edifice! Can't wait to see it.
