BCO Graffiti Art & Bike Ride
October 1, 2017 - 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Market Square Park (in front of Niko Niko's)
301 Milam Street
Houston, TX 77002

Have you checked out the outdoor artwork adorning the city these days?

Graffiti has moved from outlaw to street art, and some of the top artists and newcomers are spraying it up, right here in Houston. We’ll be riding around H-town while checking out some of the more prominent and promising graphics to be seen.
Most of the ride today is on the streets of Houston, so DON’T forget your helmet – if you do, we will have a few to lend.

Want to preview some of the art we will be seeing? Check out www.gulfcoastgraffiti.com.   We’ll wind down the day at Niko Niko’s patio right where we started –Greek food, beer and sodas are available. So bring some cash, your wheels, and your helmet and see art like you have never seen it before, from the seat of your bike!

No bike? No worries!
You can pick up a bike from a B-Cycle kiosk around town. Check their map and info here: http://houston.bcycle.com Or, Bike Barn has a great rental shop at their Bayou Rental shop 105 Sabine St. Houston, Texas 77007 on Buffalo Bayou at Hidden Lake.

Meet at Market Square Park in front of Niko Niko's - Parking: There is an abundance of on-street parking in downtown.  Metered on-street parking is free all day on Sundays. Never park at a red meter or if the street has red markings.  Milam and Travis streets along the park are also considered mobility lanes so you cannot park there from 7-9 am or 4-6 pm.
$5 parking is also available at Market Square Garage at 300 Milam, which is conveniently located across the street from the park.

Additional info call 713-524-3567 or e-mail to info@bayoucityoutdoors.com RSVP at http://bit.ly/2w1Dpc5

Get your copy of Houston A to Z while it lasts.  You'll find 8 pages of the coolest, the curious, the gems and the underground of our town.  It's everything you need to know to be a Houston aficionado and  it's completely FREE - today! http://bit.ly/2gCCaIy

BCO - A Walk in the Woods

Aka Terry Hershey Park - Hike the Ant Hills

October 1, 2017 - 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM

Let's meet at Cafe Express:

1111 Eldridge Pkwy

Houston, TX 77077

The Terry Hershey Park Hike & Bike Trail is an east-west route along the banks of the Buffalo Bayou in the Energy Corridor. It provides more than 30 miles of trail from Barker Dam (near State Highway 6) to Texas Beltway 8 and the Sam Houston Tollway. There are paved trails in the cleared stretch of the park. The dirt trails, however, cut through the densely grown forest growing along the bayou, and are not easily accessible or typically traveled.

Join us for an hour and a half quick-paced hike through some of the lesser-known (and more adventuresome) trails our park has to offer.  Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, it’s easy to bang a toe on a tree root.  And, there’s some "elevation" in the park that you wouldn’t expect from just driving by. Bring water; there are no water fountains along the trails.  If it is cool out (below 70) dogs are welcome. Bring Fido’s water bowl, leash and doggie bags.

After the hike, join a group of us for lunch and coffee.

Look for the group gathered at Cafe Express.  There will be white and green Bayou City Outdoor signs with the group and on the vehicle.

Please, check the meeting location map on the Bayou City Outdoors site calendar. RSVP at http://www.bayoucityoutdoors.com
Additional info call 713-524-3567 or e-mail to info@bayoucityoutdoors.com

Travel 101: Packing Matters

Let's face it - if you pack incorrectly you are either going to be bummed, miserable or buying a bunch of stuff when you should be playing!
October 4, 2017
6:45 PM – 8:00 PM
Whole Earth Provision Co.
2501 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056
OR online at www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors

Houston Outdoor LIVE - join us in person or check us out via Facebook’s new feature, Facebook Live (www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors). Both events run simultaneously and you can join the Q&A online or in person.

You’ll want to join us in person if at all possible because we have a very cool giveaway compliments of Whole Earth Provision, an Osprey 95L Transporter Duffle in sexy red!  Plus, we’ll have refreshments provided by Karbach Brewing Co. & snacks too.  The giveaway will be held this evening at the end of the presentation.

Traverse the Serengeti in style or Ease Through the Canyon
We’re totally in agreement with our girl, Helen Keller, who said “Life is either a great adventure or nothing.”

What adventure have you planned for this year? Is it glamping in Africa while snapping photos of lions, hyenas and zebras (OH MY) on a safari across the Serengeti? Or, maybe you’re staying closer to home, backpacking the10-mile trail to the clear blue waters of Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon.
Whatever your journey, one thing we know is that you’re going to carry everything with ease! Forget something at home and you might find yourself missing out on all your trip has to offer or worse- you could find yourself up a creek without a paddle, literally!
That’s why we’re taking you to our favorite outdoor store to browse and talk everything you may want or need on your next big trip. Fun fact about Whole Earth Provision Co., these outdoor stores can ONLY BE FOUND in Texas, so call us biased, but Texas rocks!

Topics we’ll cover:

- Clothing and layering
- Accessories- scarves, hats, sunglasses and more
- Boots, trail runners and Chacos
- Gear, gear and more gear (backpack, hydration bags, purifying filters, hammocks, tents, etc.)
- Solar technology
- All the other new and amazing products out there you didn’t even know existed

Show up in person or watch live, and you'll also be able to download the free #10Essentials packing list for any trip that evening!
Don’t forget to sign up for this evening at the event for the drawing of an Osprey 95L Transporter Duffle (Red)

BCO MS150 Kick-Off Dinner and Q&A

Tuesday, October 17, 2017 - 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Becks Prime - Memorial Park Location

1001 East Memorial Loop

Houston, TX 77007

Ever wanted to ride the MS150 (or just find out if you really want to ride it)?  Have you ridden it before but heard that BCO does it with panache and style and you want in?

PLUS

This year it is rumored there will be some changes to the MS150 route.  Also, we have a few new "spins" to add to our training series - be the first to know!

Fall in Houston means it's registration time for the MS150 ride from Houston to Austin.  If you've ever thought about participating in the MS150 ride but didn’t know what to expect, then join us to learn everything you need to know about the event.

If you’re a seasoned veteran, then come out and say “hi!”.  Brand new to the adventure?  We'll go through the event from A-Z and answer any questions you may have about the ride.

We'll discuss:

* Registration

* Fundraising requirements and tips

* Benefits of riding with Team BCO

* BCO Training Series

* Equipment you may need for your ride

* Overnight lodging at the Bed & Breakfast vs. the Fairground in La Grange

* How to get back to Houston

* Everything else you may not have thought to ask

If you've put off trying the MS150 because you've been apprehensive about what to expect on the ride, or if you just didn't know the whole process, come out and let us fill you in.  Whether you're new to cycling or haven't been on a bike in years, there's no reason why you can't ride the 160 miles from Houston to Austin with the right training.

When it's all said and done, crossing that finish line in Austin will be one of the more rewarding experiences you'll ever have, and BCO will be there to support you every step of the way.

The coolest thing about riding with Team BCO is the people - come out and meet some of the Team and the Team Captains.  We ever have a Social Team Captain (we're serious about our fun)!

We are in the private room, just come on in and ask for BCO!

Parking – Parking in front of Beck’s, share a lot with the golf course

RSVP at http://bit.ly/2wmGPc2.  Additional info call 713-524-3567 or e-mail to info@bayoucityoutdoors.com

October 18th – Backpacking 101 at Whole Earth Provision Co.

Backpacking is camping to the max. It enables you to find those once in a lifetime, National Geographic worthy vistas and take the path less traveled! It is about finding your inner John Muir and taking only what you need. Backpacking is the ultimate adventure.
One of the big mistakes is over packing. We admit to a special set of skills for fitting an outstanding amount of objects into our purses and a backpack is no different. However, like life, backpacking is all about balance and the trick is to keep your pack light enough to carry while still having everything you need.
Join us at Whole Earth Provision Co. We will have a packing demo and weighing-in session to demonstrate live the value of choosing your gear carefully.

Topics Covered:

- Food and water needs and options
- Backcountry toilets and beyond
- Building up to carrying your pack
- How to pack your pack
- What you need in your first aid kit
- Filtering water with several different types of filters
- Staying safe around potential predators

BCO Orientation Dinner

October 19, 2017. 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Becks Prime - Memorial Park Location

1001 East Memorial Loop

Houston, TX 77007

Come make new friends and learn about all the fun you're about to have in Houston and world-wide hiking, biking, traveling, kayaking, socializing and whatever we can come up with that’s fun!

Are you new to BCO and curious to discover the ins, outs, and what all a social, outdoor activity group like us has to offer?  Have you been stalking the calendar for months (or years) and haven't joined yet... maybe you just have a few more questions?  Or, you're already a member but you might need some tips on navigating the website, or you're still a little nervous about attending an event or outing alone.  Just want to come say hi? Do it! You'll meet folks in the same exact boat as you, and you'll learn a whole lot about all the fun Bayou City Outdoors has to offer.

Our calendar can be a little overwhelming with 80 to 100 events every month, so let us explain some of our favorites and tell you everything you need to know about being a BCO member. We'll fill you in on the perks, discounts, loaner gear, buddy program, website, RSVP system, tips and so much more.

We work hard to make this a little more “formal” (if we could ever be accused of that!) than our Meet & Greets.  Time and size permitting, we will have a presentation, Q&A, and social time too.  We may even have a few Event Leaders on hand to talk about their upcoming events!

Come make new friends and learn about all the fun you're about to have in Houston and world-wide hiking, biking, traveling, kayaking, socializing and whatever we can come up with that’s fun!

Parking – Parking in front of Beck’s, share a lot with the golf course

There is no charge for the event, but you do pay need to for your own dinner.

Boo, Brew & Bridges - Walk & Party by BCO & HTXO

Tuesday, Halloween night – October 31, 2017  - 6:00 - 9:00 PM
Under the Radar Brewery
1506 Truxillo St
Houston, TX 77004

Join BCO & HTXO this Halloween as we get our slither on for a haunted walk followed by some boss brews for those who make it back from the haunted Houston bridges.  Go all out on your costume or come sans costume and straight from work (that’s scary enough).  You will want to have comfortable shoes to walk in.

Under the Radar Brewery will open exclusively for our BCO & HTXO party this evening.   We’ll plan to Leave Under the Radar Brewery at 6:45 and we'll return about 7:45.  We’ll be tiptoeing across the glowing black and orange bridges of the Montrose District on this eerie evening.

This is a dog-friendly event and dogs are allowed on the walk (about 2 miles).  Plus, feel free to embarrass Fido and dress him/her up in costume.  Pup Squad Animal Rescue will be joining us for the event.  You’ll have a chance to say hi, get your photo taken, help an animal in need or just give a dog a bone (leg bones preferred).

RSVP at http://bit.ly/2w1TSga Additional info call 713-524-3567 or e-mail to info@bayoucityoutdoors.com
